After some listening hours I can say that Sennheiser HD414 pads are not a solution for GS1 using with ROCK music. I didn't get anything that I would like from the sound. Stronger, I didn't like it at all. I have been pushing every time again and again, but after I switch to the originals, WOW I hear what I must hear and enjoy them even more. You are interesting about the sound of course. Well, there are not that much to say, to be honest. Everything just increase so much that it is like that from huge, wide sound spectrum with a lot of detail and fun it goes to pressed, muddy and kind of RS1 but much worse sound. You don't get the punch like you would love to. They still sound kind of distant, or would I say unnatural close.
What I know for sure that if you have the RIGHT amplification, you will be enjoying them with all kind of music. Why I think so? Because after I did tried them with my Aspen I was not aware of the fact that also I have an Pioneer receiver, which have phone output as well. So when I put GS1 in their I did enjoy them little bit more than with Aspen. They do miss a detail and clearness of the sound, but they do not have that harshness with HIGHS with some records. So different amp, like Melos, would make them better sounding, I guess. However I can not be sure of that until I own one and can compare it with the rest.

How does GS1000 react with standard Grado bowls? I heard some positive results from that combination.

I have tried it when I had MS PRO and didn't like it also. The most problem I have is unnatural sounding GS1. Can be my taste as well, because the presentation isn't the way I would love to hear.

Agreed. I'll be getting the bowls this week, but I've heard every other pad on the GS, and only the bagels sound good to my ears. I had high hopes for the C-pads but alas, they have their own set of issues.

Would be interesting try to cut some edge of the bagels, like 1 cm. This way they will become less wide and deep away from your ears. If they were not that expensive I would definitely try.

For the genres of music I primarily listen to:

For the time that I owned the GS-1000s, the Bowl pads were the only pads that truly made me happy with the GS-1000s. Flat pads were too Bassy/Muddy, Bagel pads were too distant, and the mids didn't sound right (but at least the soundstage was nice), Bowls were just right.

So in the end I decided I wasn't getting anything out of the GS-1000s that the RS-1s didn't already do (and in some cases even better).

The tiny yellow senn pads didn't work on the GS??

HaHa, yeah, I have some old tires off of a VW Type iii if you want to put those on some huge hummer, perhaps that will make the hummer sound better too??

Just fooling, if the GS sounds no good with the bagels..the sound may not be to your preference from the shoot. If you still like the GS but it sounds like crap, I would go hunting for duff matter upstream

I did try VW tires as well, just forgot to tell

No, I like the GS sound and will stick with bagels. I need SR225 and another amp, maybe

I have to agree. I did like the 414 pads after Jahn had mentioned them. It gave a more refined RS-1 sound with more bass, but without the "in your face" energy that the RS-1 has.

But after switching back to the bagels, the air returned, the sparkle returned, etc. Also, bowls gave a strange sound to it. Yes the bagels give a distant sound which allows a bigger soundstage and puts you farther back in the audience, but that's part of the design. If you want small, in your face soundstage - the RS-1 will put you there.

I guess John put the bagels on for a reason.

You've just touched up a painting by Van Gogh with a can of spray paint....

The "Donut" is the major piece of the the GS1000 design. If you take it away, why did you bother to pay almost $1k for these phones ?

You could have paid for a pair of MS2 and call it a done deal.

not if you were one of the (horrible, bad, terrible) people that got 'em for <$5 from a store that probably had it misprinted... i might still have them around (2 or 3) and i could send you a couple, if i can find them. don't like the gs1000, will probably never use them, and i feel guilty for taking advantage of that store.
