** I'm always intrigued (bemused?) by the notion that headphone 'X' is fabulous on music category 'Z'. What about how the music is recorded, about the venue of recording, about what effects were added?
It's not totally wrong. Jazz, for example, is usually very well recorded, even the stuff from the late 50s. So that's not an issue. Take the GS1000i, it is quite boomy/bass heavy, but with Jazz, which usually isn't overly complex in the amount of instruments and in the mixing, that can be an advantage. You get a very full, detailed sound with beautiful vocals with Jazz, but it will sound crap with The Mars Volta.
* Please refrain from pointing out album "So-and-so" from 1982 where three bass players, four percussionists, world-renowned keyboard player HE behind his synth castle, a 100-piece spiritual choir, and Miles Davis cause a sonic mayhem. The Jazz I usually listen to is 3-5 man groups!
The GH2 and GH4 on the other hand, you can throw anything at them and it will sound great.
I'm wondering what it is about the 325x that makes you inquire about alternatives. What's missing in your experience with them? Also, what is your budget?
I really love the 325x (stock pads) - i just wondered if there was any grado that surpassed them with vocal jazz (some very old like bessie smith, ealy louis)

Sure, there are myriad components that contribute to the overall sound, but do you disagree that some headphones just have a certain magic when it comes to __fill in the blank__ genre (be it jazz vocals, electric guitar crunch, orchestral majesty)? The unspoken caveats being: in your system; with your ears…
Grados have a particular house sound, with variations from model to model (as do most manufacturers to some degree or other) but I do find that I have clear preferences for certain headphones for certain genres. You don’t, Jonathan?

I find this fascinating. You certainly have the wide variety of gear to choose from to tailor the sound to your liking however you see fit in the moment for any given recording. Do you find yourself choosing Grados more for any particular genre more than others (compared to your ZMFs or other manufacturers)? Or is it always recording-based? (I’m imagining a vast database spreadsheet of albums notated with amps and headphone models )

.... it is recording based. The 'vast database spreadsheet' indeed exists -- it is on the B(rain): drive .... . For listening sessions, my thoughts are: "(i) to what music do I feel like listening?; (ii) given the recording, with what headphone do I feel like listening?"
The 325x's sometimes have too much bass/warm, I can't hear the separation like the 225x's. Is there any others has the same bass of 225x but more details, resolution?
Just wondering other cans above RS2x, I got the 325x and that rs2x I borrowed from my friend
By the way, is G cushion good with 325x ? Or any aftermarket good G cushions?
And is the TTVJ deluxe pad the same as F cushion or better? Price is double

Maybe the GH series? I picked up the 225x, liked them but returned them and found a used GH1 for a good deal and really liked those. Never A/B'd the GH1 and 225x so I'm not entirely sure how similarly they were tonally but I did feel the GH1 was an upgrade across the board for me. I no longer have the GH1 either since my Verite ended up getting all my listening time, but it was a great HP
I've never heard SR225x, but you definitely need to audition MS2 it's basically a tuned version of 325. I have an older generation of 325 and if I have to compare it to MS2, the latter one is less bright at treble and more balanced overall with less peaky spikes across mids. MS2 is not extremely bassy, but you will hear every drum kick with enough low end extension making it ideal for basically any kind of music, perhaps EDM and hip-hop would be MS2 weakness since they don't sound very engaging. If you need to take things further with better instrument separation, wider soundstage and even more low end extension with surgical precision drums then go in the direction of MS Pro.
