sometime before the summer ends, i wanted to purchase myself a new headphone, i've narrowed it down to either a grado, beyer, or denon... i was set in getting an RS-1 with RA-1 amp from ebay but stupid me, i lost the auction in the last 4-5 seconds!>@>@4=#( that went for $560

well im coming from shure e500's and im looking for something that i cna use at home for movies and music. not sure if my setup matters but at the moment i have
source
Cowon D2
Kenwood HD30GB9
iRiver 340 (mp3/cd) w/lineout - on its way soon!
Sony Discman D-77 - broke but gonna try to fix
amp
iBasso P1
headphones
Shure e500's w/s. black foamies

personally i like the look of the grado\'s, they are aesthletically pleasing, but i hear the Denon is one of the best for BASS

and the beyers can be modded, for a steep price with almost equal bass. The Skybeyers that are being sold in the for sale forum look awesome.
with that being said, the Denon 2000 would be the cheaper solution at around 300 new w/shipping. the others are a little more pricey but still in my price range at the moment....
what should i do???

the kenwood hd30GB9 is a great player from what i read.. try and buy a lower end grado first.. see if you like their sound signature and the comfort level.. If you do, go straight up to RS1. for a closed cans, i prefer the d2000. It has everything that i want.. Bass, comfort and detail.

the kenwood hd30gb9 is awesome. i got mine in white, its a beauty! its portable, simple to use, great combo with my e500's. i probably would not sell mine ever!

so if i get a grado, should i go with the sr-60 or pay the extra for a sr-125. i've been hearing that there are subtle differences but those can make a huge difference. and the sound of the grado's are 2 completely different monsters when comparing it to the denon d-2000?

i listen to a lot of different styles, to name a few, rap, reggae(gotta lvoe bob), hawaiian, trance, rock, pop.... i dont really listen to classical, opera, jazz(not my generation :p). so mostly 90's and more of the current mainstream stuff. but i am open to almost all music genres.

Having owned the RS-2s and Denons, their differences being, for your generes of interest and gear: slightly more details with less bass and open vs closed with better bass a tad less midrange details & promenance, with slightly rolled off treble both being easy to drive... But for me the biggest difference is the outstanding soundstaging of the Denons along with their nearly unequaled comfort FTW

Good luck~

with that being said, im leaning towards the denon's. but im not sure what you mean by "unequaled comfort". is it more comfortable? do you think the denon's are better than your rs-2 for movies & games?

Nearly unequaled amongst ANY other headphone and contrasts with the RS-2 in the area of comfort, NO comparison!

For both movies and from what I understand with games(because I don't game), sound staging becomes of paramount importance which Grados simply do not posess with their "on stage" presentation which IS their strong point for music if that is of personal preferance to the listener vs a wide soundstage presentation. As a multipurpose headphone there is only one appropriate choice between the Grados and Denons, IMO!

If you like bass, especially overwhelming bass, you will like the Beyer DT770 Pro/80s. It is very enjoyable. Not the most natural sound, but definitely great for bass.

unfortunately I have not heard any Denons but have heard the Grado line till RS-1 and the Beyer DT990. For the songs you listen to and also as a multipurpose headphone, I definitely do think that the Beyer is a better choice. Beyer IMO has better soundstage, bass response and a nice neutral sound.

Do the Denons have a tight punchy type bass? I listen mostly to metal / trance / chill out. Im looking for something with good mids and trebel also. I have a set of k701s so i can change between headphones. Does anyone make a re-cable for the Denons?

Buy or borrow all three!

Seriously though, you have to find your sound and the only way to do that is to listen to them. Go to a meet, borrow from someone in the area or buy used. I'm finally narrowing things down to about 5 sets of cans.......

Well you are looking to an entirely different investment in amplification of the Beyers as well as their troubling treble which MUST be addressed with the choice of source usually as well as highest quality recordings; Only then do my 990s preform nicely with their wider soundstaging and instrument seperation compared to the D2000s. The Beyers will present a much more cold / bright and even metalic sonic presentation with fat and bloated bass if these prerequisites are not first addressed. However, with the right gear the Beyers are a beauty to listen to indeed, and I do love them, but still there are many times the D2000s are prefered here

Refer you to the many Denon threads for opinions.

But in short, yep, impactful, tight deep bass with nice mids and rolled off treble when compared to the k701s. The k701s have the best mids with terrific detail and highly extended, ariy treble, with the roomwide soundstaging which are all dependent upon the associated gears...Whereas, what the D2000 does is not so dependent upon the component chain, IMO...

/BTW, k701s and D2000s are a very nice set of complementary headphones, IMO

Now I yearn to listen to the D2000s heh...but somehow its almost impossible for me since I am all the way in Malaysia and I can't afford buying something just to test them out heh.
