I had an idea about the 414 pads that people use with their Grado's and was wondering if anybody has tried this. Personally I hate, and I do mean hate, the color yellow. So naturally I have not even given it a thought to try the 414 pads as they look hideous IMO on Grado's. Anyways so the thought that I had was if anybody has tried or what you all think about using Rit Dye to dye them black or something. You can pick up the stuff for a couple of bucks at Walmart or similar, but I have no 414 pads to experiment on. Does anybody want to be the guinea pig?!!!

Actually, tons of people have dyed their pads black. It mostly works, except when it starts flaking off, leaving your ears full of black powder. Personally, I like the retro yellow colours, gives it a bit of personality.

I wonder is using a different brand of dye would prevent flaking (or possibly there are higher quality dyes?).

I'll be dying mine either red or black relatively soon, but I'd like it to be a permanent solution.

I wonder if you use blue will you get green? That would be sweet to have some dank ass cans.

this is a tried and true "mod" for the hd414 pads that will get you some black pads...search in the headphones section for "rit dye" (or "414") and you should get a bunch of results.

Yep -- I did mine a couple of years ago, and I have had no flaking problems, although the dye has faded in some spots to a dark brown. The key is to rinse thoroughly and many, many times. Even with the fading, I think it looks tons better than the Senn yellow.
