depending on which exact model they are, many consider them to be the best Grado ever made.

[edit: are those yours, btw? they look absolutely pristine. the red lettering had a tendency to rub off, apparently.]

Use a search button, you will find tons of information about HP-1000 Series. Search terms: HP-1, HP-2, HP-3 or HP-1000.

BTW "1000" means that Grado manufactured only 1000 pieces. These were the first Grado headphones. Design was made by Joseph Grado in the late 80's. There were 3 models in this series, HP-1's are considered to be the best, HP-2's don't have polarizing switches, it is said that HP-3's are the worst.

But even being the worst IIRC the Grado lovers considered the HP-3, far better then RS-1

There is no known way to tell the HP-2 from the HP-3 without the box. The only difference between the headphones is the tolerances to which the drivers were matched.

AFAIK, the HP-1000 designation has absolutely nothing to do with the number of headphones made, although it may be close due to pure coincidence.

No one really knows how many HP1000 headphones were made. Even reports back from people who talk to John and Joe Grado vary greatly. It’s nice to see the PS-1 Pros are serialized.

How about the cable? Anyone know if the ultrawide bandwidth reference cable was used on the HP-3’s?

As a side note I believe the HP1’s sold for $595, HP2’s for $495 and HP3’s for $395 originally.

Yep, amazingly I think in recent months I've seen these cans go for at least original retail value, with the HP3 owners probably getting a bit of profit by passing off as HP2s. I think this is partially due to the PS-1's emergence, plus the fact that the original drivers may be getting a bit ragged around now...

According to my conversation with John Grado there where Parts made for one thousand HP1000s ,So less then one thousand where actually built and sold as spare parts where kept for repairs.
I have a pair of HP3s with the ultrabandwidth referance cable, mint with the origional box.
You are correct on the origional prices for the HP phones.I actually bought a new pair of HP2s when they first came out for 450.00,Sold them later on & still regrete it as they where mint when I sold them for 250.00.
