Came home today to find my package from Amazon waiting for me...tore it open and busted out a brand new pair of Ultrasone Zinos. These are my first Ultrasone cans and as I've been on a portable phone kick lately these looked pretty cool.

In the looks department they are killer, I love the shiny gunmetal housings with brushed aluminum badges. I like the silverish fabric pads too. Very high tech looking without being gaudy or bling. The carrying case is nice and I like the fitted foam insert.

I don't care much for the cable, it is stiff rubber that is still "kinky" from being wrapped up in the package. I prefer nice flexible cables that unwrap straight but it's a minor complaint.

They are lightweight and the fit is very comfortable. I kind of don't like the way the housings flop around because the folding hinges don't lock into the open position, but I could live with it.

Now the really bad...the sound out of the box is horrible! Bass is good, lots of treble too but the mids are terrible. Vocals and brass are thin, harsh and metallic. At times they almost hurt my ears! I can only hope they improve with burn-in but I doubt they will improve much. I had read that these were bass heavy but I would disagree, I think the bass is just right. I also don't hear the S-Logic effect but I didn't really expect to anyway.

Unless these smooth out with burn-in, I'm afraid they'll be going back to Amazon. To my ears, they just can't compete with Senn PX100s or Denon D1001s, both great performers in the same (or lower) price range. I think even the AT ES7s sounded better to me when I had them, even though their mids were also kind of honky.

I'll give these a few days and maybe they'll grow on me.

What's wrong with this thread?

As I already mentioned, at first I was shocked of the poor SQ but I'm wearing them right now and I think they sound really great! Haven't tried neither of the two you mentioned. I can only compare to Sennheiser HD 228 (horrible) and K 450 ('meh' at best).

I notice S-Logic only slightly with stereo sounds. Try turning the cans a little - that improved the effect for me.

Bass is perfect. Not too strong at all but very clear.

I read that thread and it sound like disliked the SQ on one source, then liked them with a different source, right? Which would lead me to believe the source was the problem. I am listening to mine with my iPhone 3G, not the best source but my other phones sound fine with it.

So my question is will the mids change much with more burn in?

I left mine playing overnight and there is some improvement this morning but I don't know if it's enough for them to earn a permanent spot in my stable...
