Bought them from Lionel.. I can see why ppl would rate these cans as boring.. Compared to my 595 & 650 they are 'boring'..But the incredible detail & better bass, & bass extention make up for it, & the lack of a big soundstage I can live with.. I already experienced the good & the bad..Same CD.. one song had an awful hiss & pop to it..Somthing my 650/595 hid very well..But on another track, I jumped at all the new detail that the 5000 revealed

Was incredible to say the least..Easily beating 650/595 in that regard.. Kept looking back to see if my father was talking to me.. I'm impressed..Not sure if they will be my main cans..To neutral with a average sound stage..But definatly a keeper!!

Better bass than the HD650? The HD650 has a lot more bass than the SA5000, and honestly you will not find too many members that will consider it bad neither...

Better Bass? Personally, I like the way the SA5000 handles the bass better.. I'm sure Amps/DAC plays a huge as well..

Bass??? Which bass??? The SA5K bass is so tight that IMO is nonexistent, a real shame as I liked the rest...

The MDR-SA5000 sounded GREAT synergistically speaking with the darkvoice tha336 amp; harshness was gone, thanks to the colorful tube glory.

Good point kool bubba.

Congrats on your new headphones!

I found the bass so incredibly tight on the SA5k's that it was almost nonexistent. I grew to live with (and like) this kind of bass to be able to enjoy the SA5k's great handling of microdetails. You should consider checking out some electrostats some time in the future. I liked SA5k bass as well since I figured that it was the only kind of bass I could get if I wanted a ultra-detailed sound, but then I tried some STAX electrostats. Much more "juice" than the SA5k's and more detailed at the same time (With a bigger soundstage as well). I found the STAX much closer to neutral than the SA5k's (I though the SA5k's were neutral at first as well, but after trying some STAX, I realized that the SA5k's had a rather dry low to mid range, while the upper mid-range and highs were greatly emphasized and far from neutral).

HD650 doesn't have much in the detail department compared to many other high-end cans imho.. They might beat most of the medium class cans in detail but when it comes to higher-end cans they sound bit too laid back I guess for lack of better words. Better source, amp and cable upgrade helps allot of course but this goes for all other cans as well.

They are how ever very forgiving cans imo.. Very easy to listen to and the time just flies by because they might actually be the least fatiguing cans I've heard. I want to keep mine but my budget right now wont allow me to own more then one expensive headphone at a time :/... And I want more detail.

EDIT: Sorry for wandering away from topic, I know it was mainly about the SA5000 (which I haven't heard and can't have an opinion about at this time). But the HD650 was mentioned allot in this topic so I guess I just reacted to that. Peace

Yup, I feel the K1000 and SR-404 are more detailed than the SA5000.

The SA5000 resolves micro detail better than the HD580.
