Hi-MD supports lpcm, hi-sp (256), lp2 (132), hi-lp (64), and atrac3plus 48 in Hi-MD mode. In Netmd mode, lp (292, not via SS or transcoded from lp2), lp2 and lp4.
If you want SS not to transcode when transferring, set it in "Standard Transfer Mode".

That means your transcoding (encoding something already encoded) and that hurts the SQ. I use HiSP and don't convert it when transferring them, because I prefer better SQ to more tracks. Mind you I don't use the HiMD as a player very often as I have another MP3 player. I use it mainly for recording. I say rip them to the same bitrate that you'll be using on the HiMD. Best choice are HiSP(256), LP2(132) or HiSP(64). Remember you can always get another HiMD disk if you need more space.

PCM is CD Quality, SP is (292), and LP2 is (132). Whats LP and LPPCM?

At the end of the day you're the only judge of what you like. If you like what you hear then just enjoy it. Its a sweet looking unit. I've an older HiMD, I'd love a RH10 though.

A short update. the player has worked great no problems at all. the little gum stick battery lasted a long time. i took it out when uploading songs and what not. i havn't used the AA pack thing yet, makes it more bulky in the pocket.

im super impressed with the sound, im no audiophile but i do like and can tell the difference between a crappy mp3 and a good one. i did rip LP2 (132) i could fit alot of music on one disk but i was noticing some slight signs of poor compression. im re ripping at Atrac3+ 256 right now, only 10-12 cds to a disk but the sound is much improved...i just need some more Hi-MD's

I will soon get a mic so if you have some advice or what mic will be good for classroom/music recording that would be great...nothing professional but something that will pic up acustic guitar stuff or a jazz band at school.

the RH10 also powers my new Grado Sr60's quite nicly...i listend for an hour or so before falling asleep last night.
