So I finally got my Grado's. After listening to several different headphones from Grado, I found the sound from all of them was very similiar. I actually took the SR-60's over the SR-80's, because even after wearing them for a few minutes, I knew I couldn't wear them long term.

I also tested some senhiesers and AKG's. I found all the sens i tested very bass heavy, and boomy. They sounded very closed in and small. Even the open ones.

I liked the sound of the AKG's, but found them out of my range for my limited budget.

So they may be entry level cans, but they beat the hell out of my sen mx55's.

The SR-60s are great cans. I really like their forward presentation. You can always buy some bowls for them at a later time and turn them into SR-80s. The bowls aren't bad once they're broken in.

Once you start down the mod path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will...

Which Sennheiser and AKG models did you try? I've listened to my HD580's nearly non-stop since getting them in April. My Alessandro MS1's (similar to the SR-60/80) I found to be way too fatiguing. I'm also a fan of sound stage, and the MS1's have none.

LawnGnome, where did you buy your SR-60 from?

Bay Bloor Radio at bay and bloor in Toronto. One of the only places in Canada that have them. They on for 99$. Which is still high considering the Canadian dollar is so high right now.

And I really dont think U will be getting bowls. I was going to get the SR-80's, but found the bowls very hard on my ears. My stretched lobes don't help much.

Dont think I will be buying new headphones again soon. (fight the headfi evils). I think I am going to look for a portable amp.

Just a side note here. IMO, the MS-1 do have reasonable soundstage that works well enough for the types of music normally listened to the "average" MS-1 fan. The MS2i expands that soundstage to the point that I find the soundstage on my MS2i to be just shy of what I hear on my HD600. Yeah; surprised me too!

For intimate recordings I prefer my MS-1/MS2i, for the more expansive stuff I reach for the Senns.

Works for me, anyway.

The MS-1s have a small sound stage compared to the SR-80s, but the SR-80s will be small compared to the Senns. You can tame the highs of your MS-1s a little by adding bowl pads to them and ditching the stock comfy pads. The bowls will add a little depth to the MS-1s. It might be worth the $15 to try to salvage your MS-1s.

OTOH, you may just not be a Grado guy.

I've given the HD580's over a month of good listening. Soon I'll try a little comparison. The most annoying thing with the MS-1's was listening to classical. I felt little to no sound stage with with Alessandro's. Granted, the "typical" MS-1 listener is much more a rock fan. I'll make sure to give both 'phones a good workout with what I have to listen.
