Ebay can be your best friend. I got these on Wednesday, but didn't have a 1/4 to 1/8 adapter so I had to stare at the til I got back home tonight.

I am 1hour30min into the Pendulum Essential Mix from Radio 1. I am guessing I got the bass heavy version because Drum and Bass sounds very very nice on these things. Only problem is the left driver fades in and out occasionally...probably a cable issue. I am running them out of my macbook pro with no amp. I am surprised at how good they sound and am VERY excited to get an amp and maybe try some mods (since I can't solder I might settle for the ham-handed-friendly mods like clipping out the grills. WOW though! Its 1.45am and I have no intention of going to bed anytime soon! Just thought I would share.
If I do open them up I'll take some pics. This is the first good full size headphone I have bought in a long time. Maybe I am just happy about the sound because it is new, but it sounds great to me (even unamped)! Time to surf around and try to figure out which amp to get to make this puppy wag!
Really glad this site is here...I think I have read every post...you helped me pick a good one this time!

BTW Initial impressions show powerful bass, but none of the mid echo or mud others have mentioned. They sound fairly clean, but certainly DEEP. Would that describe what people mean by bassy version? These seem to be contrivertial headphones...its hard to know what you have without ever hearing something to compare it to.

Egad! As a K340 lover, I can only say, "Amp those babies now!" I highly recommend modding them as well, but you can do that later down the line. These are maybe one of the most amp dependent phones out there. If you like them now, you're in for a real treat. There are (were?) a couple Darkvoice amps in the FS forum (one was under a whole rig type sale so you gotta look) for under $300. You won't get better for less.

BTW, congrats!

There was also a PS Audio GCHA on the F.S. Page - which is also a good choice. If you find a Corda Prehead - it is also good. That's what I have and usually have volume at aprox. 1:30

The screen mod is very effective..More openness & clarity..Better detail.. But you really need a amp.. My DAC1 does a 'decent' job but I know its being severly held back.. I'm thinking about buying a good receiver just to get the volume to a good level..& any other improvement would just be a perk..30 yr old phones have no business sounding this good...

Try some ortho's and report back.

And I totally agree with everyone else here in saying amp those sucker's asap. They'll blow your socks off if you're warm to them out of a Macbook's headphone out...

Darkvoice 336i seems to be the running in the forum as far as a fair priced powerful amp. I would like to get the cable modded, or maybe learn to solder and do it myself(?) I am coming back to the States next month and am starting the hunt for amps now! Its nice to find so much good info in here on these things! BTW, it seems that the driver fade is the lower freq so I am assuming that is the dynamic driver (I hope its the WIRE and not the DRIVER)

Well, I will echo the fact that you really do need an amp for them... however, the first time I heard mine was on a personal cd player and the violin concerto that I listened to still moved me even though my K340's were gasping for more power.

Enjoy the new headphones, they can be quite demanding, but are ultimately worth it.
