I want to buy my brother in law a pair of headphones to go with his new Sony Discman. He listens to mostly pop/rock. He will plug the phones directly into the Discman. I'd like to get him something that sounds good, but looks good too, so he won't have any real reason to wince, even if he does appreciate the gift, anyway. Probably would be best if they are not big fat cans full size over his ear.

I've considered Grado's, but I personally think they are a little ugly, even though that wouldn't stop me from buying a pair for myself. I think the AKG 26P/27i or Senn PX100 are a little better looking. Might consider the Koss PortaPro on reputation alone, even though I think those are ugly.

I suppose their are 20 other models I could consider, but I need to narrow down recommendations asap.

What's da bomb for $50 or $60? I'd like to buy something on Monday.

PX100 and SR60 would both be great. i think you can find some Sen 497 at this price if you try looking around... they are also great.

A big vote for the Grado SR-60's. His ears will thank you. And as stated above, they really don't look that bad.

If your brother is plugging the phones into a Discman, then will he not want to use the headphones portably? In which case, the Grados are out; they're simply unusuable in a portable set up due to the sheer amount of sound they leak.

I would second the Koss KSC-75 nomination. Then you can save the extra $40 for yourself.

Hmmm..for $60.......maybe Koss KSC75, and find a small inexpensive amp?
That would sound the best. There may be some $40 mint-tin amps out there.

I've never heard a pair of Grados before, but if I had $60 bucks to drop on new cans right now I would get the Grado SR-60s.

PortaPro would be excellent choice. PX100 is perfect alternative depending on taste. More balanced than Portapro, though less fun sounding.

KSC75 would be excellent choice too.

AKG K 26 P is far too bass heavy and sound isnt that good. Same with k27i which is same as k26p, just different casing. Not recommended.

I hope my answer will be the much talked about AKG K81DJ's that I just bought online for $69. I've had the Grados and loved their sound for all of 1 hour before they made my ears hurt so much I never used them again. I also have the PX100's which are very good and fairly unobtrusive for wearing in public. I think the PX100's are a safer purchase, I'm just hoping the K81s have even better sound quality as people have stated. I guess I'll find out next week.

Used SR60!!!

Grados synnergize very well with discman players IMHO. Same goes with KSC75s. The discman players I have heard, D335, D35, D223 are very neutral and open / spatious sounding. Works very well with the Grado / Koss house sound.
