Has anyone else noticed this? It's also concerning that every link I click on at Head-Fi is being sent to Google (which, in case you haven't been keeping up with the news, is being pressured by the US government to turn over its data on user searches). Not that I am worried about the government knowing what kind of headphones or DIY amp I am listening to, but what ever happened to privacy?

It's certainly pretty "in yer face" and I wonder if anybody actually ever clicks on these annoying ads? Well, they must click on them as I have them on my website and get a small cheque from Google every month

I hear what you're saying though, they're fine in moderation but plastered all over the place they're not only annoying they are also unsightly and not as effective as they could be (for the advertiser) if they were subtly located.

Obviously if you click on any of the Google ads on Head-Fi then that's revenue to Head-Fi so that cannot be a bad thing. But, yeh, in an ideal world where hosting was free and everybody got free access to the internet then ads wouldn't be necessary. Unfortunately running a site costs money and has to be paid for.

In all honestly, I don't notice them at all. I guess it can be a problem if you have really old and slow computer, but ads are a fact of life at many sites. Gott roll with the punches homes.

Firefox with Adblock is your friend.

No, not the ads. Those are lighting fast as Google AdSense servers have millions worth of hardware behind them. Also Google MediaBot crawls the site to pre-place ads for the most part.

What the poster means is Google Analytics, i.e. this source code in the header:

Code:

Code:
[left]<script src="http://www.google-analytics.com/urchin.js" type="text/javascript"> </script> <script type="text/javascript"> _uacct = "UA-179566-1"; urchinTracker(); </script>[/left]

It's not a privacy issue, that's just general site analytics that tracks paths, unique visitors, etc. It's just a modern version of weblog software. I use it on my site. It can slow down sites because every page load has to communicate to the analytics servers and report some information. It used to be Urchin, which is a competitor to analytics packages like WebTrends and Omniture.
