I am currently awaiting delivery of my new DT770's, and would like to purchase a new portable CD player.
I am interested in obtaining a cd player that handles both audio and mp3 cd-r's, and has a great sound.
I will also be using a meta42 amp.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Looking for a new pcdp myself and currently Im considering either the Sony D-NE9, which Ive heard next-to-nothing about, and the pana SL-CT800 which Ive read both good and bad things about, but which doesnt seem to be the worst choice amongst modern pcdps

I'd say two things. First, search this forum and you will find a lot of info and discussions on almost any player.
Second (my opinion), for amped listening Sony might be good for unamped look at iRiver iMP400 and iMP550

As I mentioned the panasonic sl-ct800 has been talked about several times before, altho I myself have not been able to draw any conclusion about it at least from what Ive read.

Searching for the sony ne9 however, will only yield one hit where it is just briefly mentioned.

You'll find lots of info on the iriver line of pcdps if you search tho

CD Player + Meta + DT770
So I figured I'd just ask.

Haven't used Meta or DT 770, but I believe that any portable with a good line out would do.
Generally Sony units are thought to have best line outs. iRiver iMP550 has a line out of some sort but it is a bit too bright.

There are Sony CD/mp3 players with line out. D-NE1 has one.
I haven't heard it but the chances are that it will sound better than the line out of iMP550. For everything else I'd go wit iRiver, features, sound from the headphone etc.
The problem with iRiver's line out is that it doesn't seem to bypass some of the internal circuits. For instance the line out is volume controlled and the equilizer modes function through it too. the latter is not necessarily bad since you can tweak the sound but it's not a "purist" line out.

Appears to me that the ne9 has the same specs as the ne1 only marginally larger and hevier which shouldnt be so noticable. And its cheaper and imo looks better.

The ne1 has been discussed before altho not reviewed, Ive seen posts from 2 ppl who have heard it and one of them said it sounded great and the other one that it was the worst of the new pcdps so go figure

Dont see a real reason to rule the pana out of the picutre tho

so handy.

A ne1/9 vs pana800 would be very interesting, especially since Im getting one of the two, just doesnt seem to be many (at all?) that have heard them both

As far as cd/mp3 players go tho, if u look at amazon for instance, you will find that there are tons of players out there, from other companies as well, like rio, samsung, philips, koss, memorex, rca, d-link, jvc, audiovox, genica, tdk, casion & aiwa, and others.

Those arent talked about much here tho, which usually would mean they arent any good, who knows if a gem might be hiding somewhere in there tho

anyone that says this has never seen the NE1 in person, and it's "slowly-opening-lid" is kick-ass, I think it's the prettiest pcdp ever, but alas, it is damned expensive, it has a sweet heat-spreading lid (kinda like P4, except different) so you don't burn your hand (like on the slightly-uglier 2000 and 985), I saw a 985 silver in germany (I've seen the NE1 twice), and the NE1 is far better looking, the 985 is just kinda dull, they both cannot be compared to the 915 though, still the best looking G player out there...but the CT800 does look tempting, too bad I've only seen it in the "box".
