another option is the Sansa View

Weren't we talking regular SD(hc) card slots? The View has a microSD(hc) card slot.

Is it safe to assume that any SD compatible card will do? A microSD/SDHC can fit in an adaptor if it's needed in a SD/SDHC device.

I still think the D2 is the top choice among any of the devices listed in this thread so far.

The original poster was looking for the most inexpensive solution. He found an inexpensive full size 16GB SDHC card, looking to mate it with an inexpensive player. If we start talking players that only take mini or micro SD cards, we are upping the cost significantly, as the smaller cards cost much more for the same amount of memory.

Or is it ME that's misunderstanding something?

Actually I am just asking can a cheap SD card match up with a DAP with SD slot work just as well as a expansive hi capacity flash player. The buck to storage ratio hi capacity flash player is significantly higher than SD card's $/storage ratio, why can't manufactures just integrate a SD card in the middle of the machine to cheap get flash memory, I am sure it will benefit both consumer and the company?

I would highly suggest a D2

What about the Archos 405 or 605? $130 (405)/ $230 (605), flash + support for 16GB SD card, wifi on 605, supports just about all formats. I'm hesitating between these and a D2. (ARCHOS)
Any reason why it hasn't been mentioned yet? Poor SQ?

Also, the D2 CAN play AAC if you downgrade the firmware to version 2.20/2.21. For some reason they dropped AAC support with later releases

Does anyone know if the Archos 405/605 have line out or digital out? It's not advertised anywhere, and that would be a big deal breaker- otherwise the AAC support seems to be a leg up on the D2.
