Hello,

I will hopefully be aquiring a META 42 amp soon along with some beyerdynamic DT 770 pro headphones, and was wondering what portables would offer the best sound with an amp. I have read many threads about them here, but they are for the most part about use without an amp. Also, I have have read the many rave reviews about Sony D 25's and other older players, but I would really rather not buy anything off of E-bay.

So what out there would be worth a look? Or, is it all worthless?

Thanks a bunch

Well, I would recommend a D-25S... Sorry! The headphone out is MUCH better than my SlimX. I will post a comparison of the line outs (through a META42) after Xmas. Perhaps the line outs do not differ as much as the headphone outs... but I doubt it.

Why don't you want to order off eBay? The player would be brand new, after all. I bet Silicon Salvage would sell you a D-25S without going through eBay, if that's your concern (I can PM you their phone # if you want it).

Do you have any more cirtera for a PCDP? Battery life? Skip protection?

BTW, welcome to head-fi, sorry about your wallet!

Hey, thanks for the advice,

I don't want to buy off of E-bay cause i guess im sortof wary of those kind of things, also, IIRC, doesn't the D-25 need a lot of weird stuff to run it? I guess i should check it out, but i have never purchased anything on Ebay or that type of site before.

I don't have many big needs other than sound quality, mainly I want to be able to plug it into the wall, battery life is not a huge issue, and ESP isn't really important to me.

I really like the looks of the D 25, and the reported sound quality is very appealing, but I am not sure about ordering it off of an auction site.

williamgoody, do you know how the EJ 1000 sounds compared to the D 25?

Thanks again for your help!

Although you're buying off of an auction site, ebay itself is not the seller. They simply serve as a forum to link sellers to buyers. The D-25s has been sold on ebay by Silicon Salvage. By all reports what they sell is exactly what they advertise: New old stock (never been used) D-25s units with no accessories. If you have an amp and headphone, you'd need a mini-plug to RCA cable to feed the signal to the amp. You could purchase an AC adapter from Radio Shack to power the unit. You could also purchase the battery from Sony (BP-2EX, IIRC), but you'd still need the AC adapter to charge it.

Other D-25s units might be auctioned on ebay as well, but Silicon Salvage has been doing it for a long time, and by all reports these units have performed well.

Here's how easy it would be to get a D-25S:

1. Call Silicon Salvage (they have a lot of them and I am about 90% sure that they will just sell you one - no eBay involved)

2. Buy an AC adapter from Radio Shack.

Your total cost will only be about $60 including player, shipping, and AC adapter. That's about $100 less than the D-EJ1000.

It looks like williamgoody has both the D-EJ1000 and the D-25S, so perhaps he can offer a line out comparison.

Well, amped out of the line out, both the D25 and the D-EJ1000 sound very, very comparible, to the point where I really couldn't tell the difference. Headphone out is another story, the D25 wins hands down.

Powderific. How will you be using the player? If your going to use it "on the go", get the D-EJ1000, as the D25 has no real skip protection and poorer batery life. If your looking more for a transportable player, you could get away with the D25.

Well, if the line out sounds pretty much the same, I'd really rather get an EJ1000 since it's newer, more portable, and has good battery life. I don't usually use my CD player when I'm goin places, but i would like to be able to should the need arise. Although the D-25's headphone out may be better, it doesn't seem portable enough to matter since anywhere i would lug that, i would be able to lug a headphone amp with me. That is why i would really like to know it the EJ-1000's line out is up to the D-25's.

Anyway, thanks all the advice
