I just received my first pair of "good" headphones. I ordered the Philips HP890s from Dr. Meier. I love the look and comfort of them. As everyone has said, the soundstage is impressive. They sound a lot better than my cheap sony's that came with a portable.

I will say that they seem to be selective to which songs sound great and which sound only good. Also, some songs aren't loud enough even when I crank the volume. Guess I ned an amp or better soundcard. I saw a SB turtle beach for only $40. That any good? Nevertheless, I am so excited that I have them.

The problem is, now I want some more up-front cans to contrast with the laid-back 890s. Thinking about getting some sr-60s. After that, I will probably want some Senn 580s. I want to build an amp (think it would e a cool experience, but i have no electronics experience). Since I use my PC for music and gaming, I would love to upgrade to a nice receiver some time (for the music part ofcourse). See what I mean? I know you do

Heh, welcome to Head-Fi sorry about your wallet. I would say you're doing things the right way, you don't even need

And you probbably thought we were kidding! I would look around for recs on the sound card, I am not sure how good the Turtle Beach card is, it seems that usually most folks recommend at least the Audigy 2, but I don't follow soundcards close enough to really know.

Congratulations.. now take out a second mortgage and sell anything non-essential... you might just make it to sound heaven

But anyway, M-Audio Revolution or AudioTrak Prodigy is considered the best consumer level soundcard for music right now...

Audigy is generally regarded as a good gaming audio card, but doesn't provide a good, clean signal for music playback. There's always that issue with just providing good, accurate music playback versus non-neutral signal with a bunch of special processing...

However, TurtleBeach are usually regarded as being better than Audigy in terms of music playback as well... Just not as good as Revo or Prodigy.

BTW, both Revo and Prodigy are based on the same chipset, they're both $99 MSRP. Neither makes a very good game audio card
