Another thread had mentioning about mainstream crap, so lets write up some good Metal records, any genre (no genre arguements please), mainstream and UG, what ever makes you happy, but some comments why its good in your opinion.

At The Gates - Slaughter of The Soul, DM/thrash, Sweden, 1995/2002 re-release

Band that created so cursefull term as göteborg DM.
This album was their last and finest piece of work.
Recording quality is amazinly good, re-release has 6 bonus tracks.

Ulver - Themes From William Blake's The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell, Industrial metal, Norway, 1999

Record that started Ulver's walk from BM to Tri-hop.
Great idea to use Blake's Heaven & Hell as lyrics.

Amorphis - Karelian Isthmus, Primitive BM, Finland, 1993

Good Idea, good performance, not so good recording quality.

If you understand finnish i would also recomend "Suden Uni" from moonsorrow, Pakanajuhla has so nice lyrics in finnish, the english translation on the site is crappy.
Edit: I will make "new" translation of pakanajuhla tomorrow.

I do have that one also, but don't want to throw too many names out there.......also similar to MOONSORROW and maybe just as good is WINDIR, if I updated list I would put one of their albums in there.

Not a single mention of King Diamond?

I haven't heard anything by him in more than a decade, but I would put Abigail on my list of "Good Metal."

I thought <Tourniquet> was excellent but they are Christain death metal band. What an odd combination! Their latest album <Where Moth And Rust Destroy> featues the Marty Friedman of Megadeath and Bruce Fraklin of Trouble.

Check the two posts' posting times. Dark Angel beat me to the punch by seconds. I like (liked?) King Diamond's solo work more than the Merciful Fate work.

Some great metal bands in my collection, and one album each:

Blind Guardian - Nightfall in Middle Earth. Epic, grandiose power metal. This one's a concept album based on one of Tolkien's books. It seemed silly and overdone to me at first, but I'm really growing to like this album.

Falconer - Falconer. Heavy power metal with a guy who can sing. He's got a biting, cynical edge on some tracks as well.

Iced Earth - Horror Show. Smooth and refined metal, but still heavy and aggressive. Each track is based on a famous monster/villain ("Jack", "Wolf", "Frankenstein"). I was really expecting to not like this album because of those themes, but it blew me away.

Iron Maiden - Powerslave. Eight tracks, worth every penny. Traditional metal; the dual lead guitars just pull me in.

Megadeth - Countdown to Extinction. Rough and unrefined, but still a great album, great band. Aggressive thrash metal and nothing else.

Metallica - the black album. Yes, I know, I need to get their older stuff. It's still the best Metallica metal I have. Also serves as my bass test CD for the deep bass on "The Struggle Within" and "Of Wolf and Man."

Queensryche - Operation:Mindcrime. The best concept album I've heard. Lighter than the rest of the stuff here. Revolutionary-themed prog metal.

Skyclad - Folkemon. Thrash/folk metal. Cynical and lighthearted. Track titles like "The Disenchanted Forest" and "The Great Brain Robbery"...and they pull it off.
