ok people. Long story. I'm a super newbie when it comes to all of this audio stuff. I'm looking for some nice headphones under 100 dollars. So here's my story:

While browsing amazon.com for some nice headphones, I came across the Sony MDR-V600 and decided to get more info from goggle. Then, I came across this website and Headwize. And from what I gathered, the Senns HD-280 are a pair of headphones comparable to the V600's. I'm really into R&B, hip hop, techno, and bascially anything with A LOT of bass in it. I don't really care that much about comfort, and I generally prefer something foldable and portable. So is there any good headphones and any of you guys would reccommend for a newbie that hates stock headphones and strives for quality at a low price?

I've also heard a lot of about amps and how they make your music experience like 700 times better. While, I really like the idea of building my own Mint Can cmoy amp for my mp3 player, i just don't have the time or the technical know-how to build it. So is there good portable and cheap amps I can buy out there from a reliable source that's great in quality too? From what you guys say, the Sony MDR-V600's match pretty well with a cmoy amp, but what headphone amp would match the HD-280's? Are there any portable headphone amps that are affordable and have great quality? Are there any sites that sell them so I can buy lots of the same amp?

(P.S.: I've posted on Heawize, but I haven't been getting any replies and sorry for all the questions)

THANKS FOR ANY HELP YOU GUYS CAN GIVE ME!

Oh dear, bad idea signing up as a member here - your wallet will never forgive you.

Beyerdynamic DT531s. Super versatile 'phone, but they are open. If they are above $100US, then consider the closed (supposedly) DT231s. For an amp, build yourself a Cmoy. It's certainly not hard.

Sony MDR-V6(not 600). Get those and you will be happy, I promise.

I think you may be mixing up the MDR-V600 with the MDR-V6. They are different phones. I would recommend the V6. They do benefit from an amp, the cheapest I believe are from our own Tigger, trading as Headsave. Try his ad in Mall-Fi.

Hmmm it seems that the majority perfer the MDR-V6's. Does anyone know where I can buy them? Also, I looked at the tutorial to building a cmoy amp and it's just too complicated for somebody who just wants quality fast! thanks for answering my questions! which do you guys prefer? The Sony MDR-V6's or the Beyerdynamic DT531's which are veristile (based on what Mysteyler said)?

I checked out headsave's amps and they look good. I decided to order one and signed up for a Pay-Pal account, but I don't know what to do next. Do you just click "Send Money" and put what you want in the Subject and Note boxes? And how can I be assured that my amp will arrive? If anyone has gotten an amp like from headsave, please direct me on what to do! thanks

The V6's are available at your neighborhood Fry's. You happen to live in a good spot to pick a pair up today. Also I'd at least glance at the Alessandro MS1's (though not very portable).

Also check this poll out (though if you're getting an amp the results change). It's not very official

Lots of people have ordered from Headsave. Also there are other members here who build similar amps.

Thanks lots to blessingX who gave me some good avice! Well, I've decided to get the Sony MDR-V6's because I'm teaching at a summer school and I need my headphones to be portable. I think I'll buy a pair of MS1's for home use a little later too because they seem like higher some better grado's at a cheaper price. Thanks, again, for the help. Also, if anyone can tell me how they ordered their amps from headsave, that would be great. I have no idea about how to order things. thanks

You're welcome. What will you be running the V6's off of? The requirement of an amp is somewhat dependent on that (there's a little debate here on how much the V6's are helped by an amp).

Tigger has an account here at head-fi. You can either PM him through this site or you can email. He says emailing is better for him. You can email him at: norm.dalgarno@sympatico.ca. He is really good to work with. After you email him he will email you back a price listing of all his amps and options. I just recently ordered one from him and it should be ready by early next week. I can't wait. I heard they are awesome amps.

Good Luck,

Phil

in my experience, the benefit of an amp to the V6's was minimal. then again i didn't think the SR80's benefitted from an amp either, yet many people say they benefit tremendously....go figure

Man this website is awesome. Well, I plan to run my just ordered V6's off of my laptop, with integrated sound card (sucks), my SlimX CD mp3 player (sounds like crap), and my Dell computer (also with integrated sound).

Ok drowningp, I'll try emailing him because I want great music FAST.

thanks
