Hey guys, my geography teacher notices that I'm very fond of 'phones, and she wants to get some nice ones.

I'm jus wondering, what are the best full-sized headphones in the $125 range?

Thanks.

whats her listening preferences? Would she prefer a bass heavy sound or ronounced midrange...?
Is she plugging them into a portable player or home hifi receiver? Any chance she already has a dedicated headphone amp?

What kind of music does she listen to?

beyerdynamic DT440 (open) or DT660 (closed). They're similar cans, one open and one closed, both with 32ohm impedance and 90dB sensitivity, relatively easy to drive even from weak portables but sounds good with even a little portable amp. Really comes alive with a good headphone amp though.

Edit: Used. The new prices for these headphones are about 40 dollars higher than your budget.

AKG K240 Studio are the best value in the ~$100 range IMO.

Also consider the Sennheiser HD555.

Seriously, add a bit more and get the bargain deal of these phones. Otherwise 555 would also be a good all around choice.

yeah i agree, if you can find hd580's for her budget, these are good, proven, headphones that will 'wow' people new to head-fi, especially since most people have never heard open-can phones and it really adds a lot of transparency to the sound. the difference between these and what people are usually used to is pretty drastic.

edit: sorry, they're probably going to be at least $180 new.
