I'm looking for some good headphones to use in a dorm room. They need to be closed so they wont bother my roommate if hes trying to sleep. Price limit is under $500 (closer to $300 would be preferred). So far I've found the DT 770s and denon ah-d2000s. anything else i should consider? source will be my apple macbook pro. im also probably going to get a gilmore lite and headroom micro dac so impedance isnt really an issue.

what do yall think?

Haven't heard the Denons but I can say that you can't go wrong with a Darth Beyer for much of anything. You can get the bare bones version for $345 from Larry but the turnaround is a few months and I honestly wouldn't recommend a 1-meter cable, especially since it won't be portable. Spend the extra $50 for the 2-meter cable and you'll be happy.

hmmm. audio technica a900 would be a cheaper headphone that doesnt need an amp

Or if the OP wanted to spend a little more, the Audio-Technica A950 Ltd. is a nice closed headphone.

I had the A900s last year and used them in my dorm a lot... they worked pretty well. But since your budget is a little higher, you could shoot for the A950LTD as mentioned above... or you could throw a little more money forward and go for a Darth Beyer (I have a pair on the way)

X 2.

The A950LTD is a great isolating headphone with divine sound quality and is easily driven by anything. Very comfortable and has a great build.

Why on earth would you spend $100 on cables for a $150 set of cans -_-.

Go stock cabling, spend the extra money on higher end cans, amp, or dac.

Only reason I see for going Darth Beyer, is they look bloody awesome. No point of putting in that extra cash if all you want is sound quality.

Might want to do some research as to what goes into making a Darth Beyer.
