The plating on my HD580 plug is coming off! I am still clinging to the hope that MAYBE it is just dirt... but it is looking like the gold plating is coming off.

Is there any way to fix this? Prevent it? Help! This is not cool...

Gold plating on all things will wear off given enough time. Many gold plated plugs look 'dirty' - this is actually gold dust from the plating itself. I would definitely clean it thoroughly - if it causes any sort of problem you can just get a new one (stock replacement cables cost ~$15, and comes with new adapter also). Or better yet, use this as an excuse to upgrade to a third-party replacement cable
