The MS-2 is good suggestion -- chances are you can score one used if you're patient. They're pretty neutral for Grados and they have decent bass (not over-powering or particularly pronounced).

Good point Jahn... I love how they replicate horn ensembles. Acoustic jazz bass sounds incredible, big open, resonant... beautiful. Its resonant and yet articulate at the same time.
Doesn't have the foreward mids of the SR225, but this does 2 things.... treble shines a little more and it opens up the soundstage further than your typical Grado.

used K501 + $200 = used SA5000
The only reason I'm keeping my K501 is that I need a second headphone for tandem listening. Then again, selling the K501 to fund the controversial unknown is a risk that may seem unsavory.
Perhaps you should be the trailblazer for the SA3000 and write up a good comparison with the K501. It seems to take a hit on the used market, though. The only time I saw one go up for sale, I think it went for $135.
I'm finding that Darth Beyers 770/80 with a touch of equalization are great for rock, especially sixties and seventies stuff. Don't know with the standard ones. You need to turn down some of the overwhelming bass and raise the mids. These cans respond really well to moderate equalization, and you never will have problems with a weak bass again
And they are really strong with drums.
I love my 501s, but they never will work with rock. They are great with classical, jazz and acoustic music, though.
