I suggested ABR because VBR modes have a tendency to bloat in size on certain types of music, for example metal, or heavily compressed pop or rock. This is true even for the --r3mix setting.
There has been a lot of discussion about --nspsytune on the r3mix forum in various threads, and for current settings that people with good ears like, see for instance, this thread:

It uses a special compile of 3.90a2 or a4, with a customized version of --ns-treble. The ABR setting suggested there adds --nssafejoint.
