I month ago I needed a better pair of headphones that the RadioShack pair I have been using. I bought a pair of used Sony MDR600's. I was sooo disappointed at that $30 purchase but learned how much better even bad headphones could sound. Sooo. In the last two weeks I have eBay'ed a pair of HD580's and (while on business travel and stuck in my hotel with my laptop) bought a pair of Grado SR60's. WOW this is un-be-leav-a-bull. The difference is outstanding. I now understand why some of you folks are so passionate about your headphones. God help me, I've been bitten by the bug. So far I have invested less than $200 and the music is immeasurably better. I am a little afraid to refine my ear anymore. I don’t think my bank account can take another expensive hobby.

Thanks for the help so far and for any in the future.

I must go listen some more.

Just in case nobody's given you that line, sorry about your wallet...
Good thing is that this is no addiction, we all could stop anytime if we *really* wanted...

Hey Duncan, what happened to your avatar, I really miss her...

Look, you might as well face it...you're screwed if your wallet can't take any more. It's OK though...you have lots of company.

It sounds like youre doing the same thing i did, im telling you skip it all , just buy an RA-1 amp and RS-1 headphones so that you dont have to keep upgrading. it seems like overkill now but once you hear them you wont go back

get out of here, quick!
i started with 370$ HD600+Porta Corda 2.

now look what this place made me do, within no more then 6 months :

Beyerdynamic DT880 (235$)
Eamax Pro tube amp with upgraded tubes: (550$)
Sony mz-r50 MD player (100$ used)
Xin Supermini v6 mini-amp (140$~)

abd on the way are:
Art DI/O DAC (100$)
DIY Cables (~120)
Meier Cross-1 (200$)
another tube upgrade, just out of curiosity (~20-70$)
and i'll get a nice DVD player probably for the DAC (>200$)

and that's the plan FOR NOW. i earn crap per month. i'm lucky to have my own apartment that my dad left me. i'm supposed to start saving to my move to new-zealand from israel, but i find it...quite hard

now you decide what you want to do..

though it would be nice if you get that supermini

Well all I can say is they have warned you. Next thing you'll know is you have headphones for the specific music genres you listen - yes, not one headphone will do you for all music genres. Then of course you'll have to pair up an amp with them.

But all I offer is enjoy the music, because that is why you got into this - to hear more of what is missing in the recording.

God may be the only one who can help you now. All we know how to do is encourage you to spend more money.

Right so right each of you,

Duncan is right of course, next is the source. My Home computer (with a SoundBlaster Live), my laptop and my home system's with a Carver m500 (upstairs) and Onkyo HT-R500 (downstairs with the TV)

I'm talking to JMT about an amp to go with my Laptop, and I have not bought a portable unit but I have my eye on the iRiver iMP-400 SlimX, Sonicblue Rio Volt SP250, eDigital Odyssey 1000 or maybe an iPod. But that's this fall or later.

when you give a man some headphones, he will want an amp...and when you give a man an amp, he will want a source...and if you give a man a source, you better be prepared to give him some interconnects and a new music collection

well luckily i only listen to one type of music so i dont have to buy all kind of headphone. i really want that Xin amp and the sr-80, but i think i'll stick with my px100 and px200, and buy a video card so i can play doom3 when its out.
