Hello folks,
I am deciding between these two amplifiers for my Etymotic ER4 P/S when I travel. Your thoughts please…..

Goals:

1. Portability
2. Sound Quality/Low noise floor
3. Build Quality (I am very careful with my gear)

Observations:
The Pocket amp seems to have goodness said about it but looks IMHO very DIY, The Go-Vibe seems more professional looking but has less come with it (pwr supply, recharges batteries etc.)

Thanks, looking for comments..

I'd go for the Go-Vibe - But having owned the 1st Go-Vibe and currently owning a classic, i guess i'm a bit of a fanboy!

Norm is a great guy to deal with and his amps are top-notch,,, Having said all this, i've never heard the PA II so i can't comment on it

I'm sure others who have will though

The big advantages of the PA2 over the go-vibe is the fact that you can plug it in or use battery power and the batteries can be charged while in the amp. The batteries are also AA instead of 9v: easier to buy anywhere... As for the sound, I have yet to hear both of them side by side

I have both and use them with my e2c, DT770-80, MS2 and KSC75.

Insert "IMHO" before any of the following comments below.

vibe2 is more open sounding, soundstage is broader. Has more "airy" sound, and treble seems more pronounced. Enclosure is huge... much larger than the guts inside. Input jack is awkwardly located on the side by itself while the output jack, switch and vol knob are on the front panel.

PA2 has more bass and midrange impact. Soundstage is slightly smaller and more "tight" sounding. Enclosure is small, just large enough to house the electronics inside. Charger comes standard and trickle charges NIMHs overnight. Can not run on 1.5V alkalines, they push the circuit into clipping, use 1.2V AA cells and its fine.

The PA2 puts you on stage with the musicians. The vibe2 puts you a couple rows back of the stage so that youre hearing a balance of the stage PA, house pa, surrounded by a large audience.

Both have a very useable volume range, and can play equally silent. The PA2s noise floor comes about just a little earlier in the volume rotation, and both are mildly noisy when the vol is cranked. IMHO noise difference is not significant enough, and should not weigh heavily in your decision.

Both are energy-misers and run for several weeks on a charge. Not a significant enough difference again.

Which do I prefer?

Clearly the PA2 is more portable, and I like how all the controls and jacks are located on the front panel. I piggy back my PA2 with my Muvo and stuff them in a tiny camera bag. Cant quite do that with the vibe2.... at least not to the same degree of portability.

re-charging feature comes standard on the PA2... again it beats the vibe2

The PA2s sound signature is better as a portable too. Its bass heavy / forward midrange signature work very well in noisy environments to overcome ambient noise. Even with my isolating e2c and closed MDRV6.

vibe2 beats the PA2 in sound quality detail and image though. Very light and articulate with my MS2. Sounds much more expensive than it is.

Generally I like the PA2 more for metal and prog-rock, while the vibe2 is better for jazz.

Tight focused image of the PA2 is better for the KSC75. Which can sound sloppy and unrefined without an amp.

Open soundstage and treble sparkle of the vibe2 is better for the bass heavy DT770-80.

MS2... sounds damn good no matter what I plug it into.

Open soundstage and treble sparkle of the vibe2 work WONDERS on the e2c. IMHO you really havent heard an e2c till you hear it through a good, open sounding amp... which the vibe2 certainly is.

Thanks Oink1, donunus and Garrett for your thoughts. I appreciate your time.

I'm leaning towards the Go-Vibe at this point for sound quality, Look and feel and reputation (although I understand that Gary and his product are top notch as well). I actually feel that the Pocket Amp 2 could be a little too small, I do like some substance (heft) to a device, I fear that cable tension could end up pulling the Pocket Amp 2 all over the place.

Kramer, which of the two amps would you get if your primary music preference is pop or rock (JPop/Rock in particular)? I'm leaning more towards the PA2 initially b/c of the price and portability, but may get the go-vibe later on if I decide to get 'cans' for home use.

PA2 is better for portable use IMHO. Note however, I modded mine and mounted it in a smaller case so its about 1/4" shorter. Their sonic differences are minor, but noticeable depending on how nit-picky you are with your music.

Sonically the two are a great match, and if you were to base it entirely on sonic attributes, then YES I would go with the govibe for the e2c. BUT... I dont like the govibes layout and its enclosure is way to big for me to consider it portable (however others may disagree). Heck, I for one found the PA2 enclosure too big for my tastes, hence the desire to mod. I place portability very high on the list of priorities. IMHO it could sound spectacular, but if its cumbersone to walk around with... theres zero net gain.

IMHO of course.

Kramer5150-
Why is your Go-Vibe in such a huge case in that pic? Is it a Serpac H65 case or something? Did you receive it from Norm that way?

The Go-Vibe version 2 doesn't usually come in a case that size-- it's usually one that's much shorter than the case you have pictured (closer to the PA2's casing).

whoa!! really? I was unaware of that. I bought it used from a fellow head-fier. Its a great little amp. I neglected to mention that you can OP amp roll the govibe. Ive been itching to try some different ones.

Yes that little cable is a DIY patch-job I did.
