I have a friend who advocates quantity (of CDs and iPod capacity) as opposed to my approach for sound quality. He was asking me if I would consider that new glass CD they just started selling in Japan. I replied that I'd rather use the money to fund a decent SACD player but we both couldn't answer which disk would sound better.

The glass CD may have an impact on sound quality due to the material that is being used, but the SACD has more bandwith and much much more data stored on it right? Doesn't that mean the SACD should sound better?

Here is the link to the glass cd in case you missed it in the news.

How, exactly, can the material have any affect on the sound quality when the sound information takes the form of digital 1s and 0s? (Assuming the media is in good, working condition.) The medium in this case is merely a method of storing the information.

So this glass CD is just another variation of the regular CD, right? It still need to conform to the standards of the redbook CD set down by Sony and Philips, so I think it will only sound as good as the source material and the mastering for the CD.

$800+ per disc buys a lot of SACDs....not to mention also a player.

I sure would hate to see what would happen if you accidentally dropped one of them onto the floor.

Glass CDs are bunk. These types of things seem to crop up every so often. If you've never heard about it, read about the RealityCheck CD machine that was all the rage about two years ago, with numerous positive reviews not just in forums but also in web rags like 6moons and Positive Feedback, until it was revealed that the product was a total scam.

Since they're selling it at the Tokyo Tower Records, it should be 30% off because of the liquidation sale, right?

Also, I don't see how glass could compete with the 64 times better resolution of the SACD.

Hey, it'd really suck to accidentally drop this thing, wouldn't it?
