I decided to DESTROY my headphones because I'm bored....destroy them for the better that is. My HD485s are like every other...or they were...they were WAY too warm and the transition from treble to mids was pretty crappy. After a lot of though, I decided that the foam needed to be tossed...
Start by just pulling the ear muffs off competely (it's not hard, they just come off)... and then do this>
Here's where you get rid of the signature it seems...ripping this foam out-
Now cut down the foam (the top...incase you change your mind later!
Now reassemble it all!
Here's where I got a bit more crafty...since I removed the foam, this is a huge part of the bass on these cans...so to prevent complete loss of bass I decided that I need to work on the OTHER side of the flaps and see if I can't suck out some more bass....
Flip the foam ear-muffs inside out!
Now finish it all up...
Finished product...

What does it sound like? I can't explain it too much...I will say it DEMOLISHES the sennheiser signature completely....that SUPER hot sound is no longer there....it's still VERY organic sounding (much more than before)...but I was actually worried about the bass being too little...so I ran a few different artists to test it- Photek, Metallica, Tool, Way Out West, DJ Hell, Siloh, Jimi Hendrix, Nine Inch Nails, Days of the New, and Marcy's Playground....some more, but you get it. I think the ONLY thing that disappoints me after listening to much music is that the source has to be VERY premo or else it sounds like complete garbage. So... I'm going to have to delete a lot of my old rips and re-rip them in lossless x_x. Oh yeah, it increased the soundstage like you would NOT believe. If you already like the VERY bassy and warm sound of the 485s...don't do this...it ruines that for you, but if you love acoustical, classical, metal, rock, or anything that's simply organic ...it's worth trying if you have an extra pair laying around. I keep emphasizing that the bass has dropped...it's about 4 db around the 64hz range....I EQed it out once, but returned it because I'm liking this new sound so much. I cut the foam in such a way that I could glue it back on if I wanted to...but I will not.
Okay, well if anyone else tries this...throw your input in because I've looked everywheres to find mods and couldn't find any
. Oh yeah, and don't flip the muffs if you have big ears.
