Can anyone compare the two amps? I've wanted a Gilmore Lite for the longest time but the lunch box is quite a bit cheaper and I'd have it much sooner. Any thoughts on this? How long do tubes last? Do I need to replace them every so often?

iirc Akwok had written about the senn 650/g-lite combo doing a fair representation of a kid brother of the famous orpheus system. try searching and you should find that thread.

What about a DarkVoice 336 / 336i? What's the difference with the i?

The 336i is a later version.

I saw that post... and... it was a key factor in my decision to buy the Monarchy M24 DAC - in conjunction with all the other "great reviews" of that DAC.

While I'm sure (based on others comments) the GL is a good amp with the HD650's (when accompanied by the PSU, as "Akwok" noted) - I really don't think "Akwok's" comments were focused on the GL by itself... so much as in conjunction with the M24 - which is a tubed DAC.

I have previously noted how absolutely incredible this DAC is with HD650's and my XCAN v3 (and the rest of the MF Small X Series) - in this combination it has few rivals at any price. It was this combination... compared... to others... that helped me understand and appreciate the real meaning of "synergy" between components - not to be discounted.

I would take great care in assuming the GL, by itself, would make such an improvement in the HD650's. My guess is... it will not... and that it may be a bit bright and cold without the rest of the pieces noted.

Having experienced the "World Class" SQ of the M24... I tend to think the later.

"Is it real... or... is it Memorex?"

I'm not too sure whether it is due to the Gilmore Lite or the M24 that makes the HD650s sound so good -- all I know is that the combination of both of them make for a very nice listening experience. I'm sure if you pair a crappy amp with the M24, or a Gilmore Lite and a crappy source it wouldn't work out anyways.

You can't go wrong with the Gilmore Lite regardless. It actually looks decent, too..
