I just bought a Macbook Pro and look foward to using an optical cable with my Headroom Desktop Amp instead of the USB, but I really dislike iTunes. Is there a general consensus on what the best alternative is? I've heard the name foobar a lot, is that for Macs?

iTunes is the one to use for Macs. It is so stable and well integrated into the system, no third party alternative has survived.

See ya

Itunes works well except in one important way: it has no real playlist editor, and you can't do other things while running a playlist. If you are looking at other music, the playlist simply stops at the end of the current song. This makes it hard to do Shoutcast mixes on the fly, or to spontaneously change a playlist.

Other that that, Itunes works great. It uses a much better database (CDDB) for tags than other programs I've used. One thing it won't do, that Windows Media Player will, is allow you to search manually for an album. If Itunes can't find it, you're stuck.

Well at least you are on the right track.

VLC is a very versatile media player, but many dislike it because of its simplicity. Foobar is great for music also and is very customiseable. Might want to look at songbird (still being developed, but seems quite nice) if you are after something that looks pretty in the way iTunes does.

Good luck - hope you find something that suits your tastes...

If you're using a Mac, iTunes works pretty well. It was written for Macs, but it is ugly and out of place on PCs. Unfortunately, Foobar is not available for Macs and I am unaware of any plans to develop a Mac-compatible version.

Thank you kindly gents. It seems though you fellows really like iTunes. Perhaps I'll give it another chance... though bloody I really don't want to.

Any other suggestions?

^ So am I!
I have used iTunes for 4 years, and experienced no problems.

I think iTunes is the best option for Windows, much less a Mac.
