Which would be better audio-technica ATH-A900 or beyerdynamic DTX 900 for running from a soundcard just for gaming in terms of creating a 3d sound?

cheers

YOu can't go wrong with something from the ATH series for gaming. They get my vote.

I can't comment on the DTX 900 as I've never auditioned them but I do own a pair of A900. They have excellent positioning and soundstage which is what you would be looking for from a set of cans used in gaming. The A900 are easy to drive and won't require an amp to sound it's best. Some feel that the bass doesn't go deep enough in the A900's. So if you're a basshead or really want feel the rumble in your bass then you may be a little disappointed. The A900's do have bass but it's not the qauntity of it that makes them sound good, it's the quality of it.

If you feel like you want more bass you can always grab a DT770/80 -- that and the A900 are the most-recommended gaming cans around here.

Yea, I agree as I also own pair of DT770/80. The DT770 bass does go deep and would really bring a smile to the face of bass lovers.
