When I started gaming I always switched vertical axes so that when you press the stick towards you, you aim up. Since I was playing flying games it only seemed natural to me that that's the way it should be.

I've come to the opinion that an normal vertical axis is vastly superior to a reversed axis. Even people that claim they are ace with an reversed vertical axis usually can't draw a coherent circle or spiral on the screen with the cursor. I've recently relapsed into my Rez addiction and those viruses that come in slanted lines and spirals are giving my fits.

The problem is I've been playing like that for years, and playing with a normal axis eats my brain. I am considering undergoing a program to reprogram myself to a normal vertical axis, but I'm not sure if it will be worth the step backwards, for the hopefully more than one step forewards.

i tend to like the normal as well, mostly for FPS. everything is backwards with reverse and to me that feels very weird. but i guess i never bothered getting used to it...

I prefer normal and see no use for reverse except for flight simulation gaming.

To me, it seems like a sort of useless thing to try and learn for FPS type games. You have to train yourself to think backwards and it can take a while to master. I'd rather focus on mastering something else.

For the n64 Goldeneye, I own the most with the reverse vertical axis

I prefer normal for everything except flight sim. Reversed just feels very weird to me.

Perhaps I was misunderstood. I currently use a reverse vertical axis. I think I should switch to normal because normal is technically superior. Almost nobody, even if they claim to be good with reverse axis, actually is when it comes to complex stuff.

But what if you were used to a reverse axis, and thought that a normal axis was technically superior? Would you go to the trouble of trying to relearn normally? I'm not sure yet because I still play way better with reverse, but I think it's limiting me ultimately.

I use a reversed vertical axis. It just came naturally to me when I first started playing Quake. I was fooling around with the A and Z buttons (look up and down), finally turned on mouselook, and I liked reverse better.

I don't think you need to be able to draw a spiral to prove that you can aim at a point on a screen. In an FPS that's all you have to do. Also, let's imagine that you had a gun in your hand and you need to aim upward. Your body (head, arms) would move down relative to the gun and the gun would move up relative to your body. If you're playing with normal vertical axis, the mouse is the gun. If you're playing with reverse vertical axis, the mouse is your body.

I also prefer normal steering - except for flying games, for which reversed steering just seems more natural. Reminds my of my old diy joystick switchbox for axis switching - I think I've built that after one of my favourite C64 games, "Master of the Lamps" iirc, had driven me nuts with normal steering in those nice flying scenes on the magic carpet...

If it's aircraft, it is ALWAYS inverse for me. I'd hate to step into a real cockpit and be used to regular style controls (especially since I want to get a pilots license). But any other time it's default.

I'm playing with normal on Counter Strike all the time. If the game has a choice for normal, I use it (unless it's an airplane sim). If not, I deal with it, and get extremely confused.

Reverse axis for camera angles in 3rd person view and normal in 1st person view, e.g. on Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, etc. Always reverse in flight games.

Basically, reverse if I use my right hand and normal if using the left hand for controlling.

Normal axis gameplay for me too. The only games I'll use inveresed axis for are Goldeneye and Turok for N64.
