Gains from combining film with BlackGates...?

Hello,

I'm wondering - for my upcoming USB DAC, I plan to have a pair of non polar BlackGate NX Hi-Q caps arranged in the Super-E configuration as output caps. I'm wondering if it will be of any gain to put two polypropylene film caps (Panasonic P series) parallel to the BGs. Will it actually destroy or hamper the benefits of the Super-E configuration? If not, is it even going to bring any sort of improvement?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

In my experience, it makes a big difference in this scenario (DAC coupling), but I was using Elna Silmics, not non-polar Black Gates, so you might find less of a difference. Anyway, I recommend trying the parallel film caps. This is something worth trying for yourself.

Thanks for your reply Wodgy.

I'm primarily concerned about disrupting the Super-E configuration and its benefits by coupling the electrolytics with film... As the BG website says:

A pair of nonpolarized Black Gate electrolytic capacitors are particularly connected in parallel or in series so that each one of the capacitors cancels the internal magnetic flux generated by the other, thereby completely eliminating internal resonance and decreasing total impedance to absolute zero as the frequency increase.

Will coupled film caps disrupt this "cancellation of internal magnetic flux" and eventual "elimination of internal resonance"?

I wonder though how much of this is really practical truth and how much is marketing BS...

Anyone experience with BG Super-E configuration?

Wow absolute zero! is this possible since there are actually no absolutes LOL

Using any Electrolytic with a film bypass maintains a low impedance over a wide frequency range, however the film cap cannot just be chosen at random or a resonant circuit will be formed. you really must have a bunch of film caps to try and see if any ringing is present with your chosen pair if so try another value film cap A good ratio of capacitance that most often avoids this is having the film cap 100 time smaller in value to the Electrolytic. Non polar Electrolytics are the only type of electrolytic i would use as DC Blocking caps. Polarized caps are not good for interstage coupling.

Black gate Electrolytics while claiming lower ESR and inductance than conventional Electrolytics have pressed on Leeds as opposed to welded ones so im questioning Black gates claims of ultra low ESR. They do however sound good as far as electrolytics go but they aren’t no Film/Foil cap that’s for sure

Thanks ppl for your insight!

I guess I'll be trying 0.47uF film caps then coupled with the 47uF BG Hi-Q NX. So, for each channel, I'll be using 2 film and 2 electrolytics... 8 total output caps. That's kind of crazy, but hey, if it'll sound good...

I'll keep this thread updated if there's anything interesting that comes out of this experiment.

i actually got rid of my blackgates on my diamond buffer, and opted for polystyrenes at .10 value, to me they are faster, more detailed and more musical, than the bg's, you can probably get for 4-5 bux ... percyaudio.com i think has some, i had 8 bg's in mine not so crazy, whatevr you do on your ppa ive done it first and crazier as far as audio quality is concerned, props on your casework.
