Hello Everyone,

Reason for Poll:
Due to the fact I have received different opinions from different Audiologists about open mouth (bite block) -vs- closed mouth. Both instruction documents from JH Audio and Ultimate Ears suggest open mouth. (bite block)

Poll:
Which method did you have?
Open mouth(bite block)?
Closed mouth?

Additional Comments:
Please comment about the fit of your IEM's.
Did you need a re-fit or adjustments?
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance,
Monnie

I did open mouth. With my left side my mouth was very wide open- three fingers wide. With my right side my mouth was just regular open- about two fingers wide.

The latter (right side, two fingers) fit perfectly and was easy to put in and remove; the former (left side, three fingers) was very snug, but I can see how some would call that 'perfect' too.

Ultimately I preferred the right side, two fingers version because I wanted ease of taking out and replacing, so I sent them in for a refit of the left side only, with new impressions of the left.

I don't know what I was thinking, i accidentally clicked closed mouth. What I meant was open mouth perfect and refit. My right ear was wonderful but the left had to be redone.

Livewires T1s - Impressions done with Relaxed Mouth as recommended at the time/ Needed Re-fit, which was done with Open Mouth and solved the problem - a bit tight at first but soon settled.

JH13Pro - Impressions done with Open Mouth / Perfect Fit.

Use a bite block.
My audiologist demonstrated that as you open your mouth, your ear canal changes shape & gets bigger, Unless you keep your jaw clenched tight all the time do open mouth.
I've had this done 3 times. The first time the lady didn't give me a bite block and it didn't fit right. The next 2 times with the bite block, they ft perfect.

Here are some information that I had gathered.
For customs, they are usually created and meant for on stage musicians.
They need to smile(move their mouth), sing, which means their facial expression would be constantly changing, which means an open jaw impression would be the best for them.

However, there are some companies that recommend close jaw impression for US, who buy them just to listen to audio. So we shouldn't be/normally wouldn't be doing anything.
We cant communicate since we are in total isolation.

However, the point is that we also move our facial expression frequently even with our customs, so the best bet anyone can take is to have open jaw impression taken.
*even batting of eye-lid is considered*

Had mine done for the second time yesterday. By a very competent seeming audiologist direct from ACS. Closed mouth. Relaxed jaw, as that is the way I tend to be when listening to music. I await the outcome with great interest.

MonnieRock> It's simple. If you want it snug, open your mouth very wide, bring something to bite into (eg. I brought a book), and make sure u keep it there all the way regardless of what your audiologist says.

I didn't like that because it limited insertion and removal.
