I think when we talk about "old" & "new" HD6X0 drivers we look to the larger oval surround & its color.
These "new" driver ones have light/silver surround beyond the light/silver ring of the driver:

Whereas these "old" driver ones have a black oval surround beyond the light/silver ring of the driver:

Also, if I am not mistaken,
The ones with the black surround are supposedly more laid back, more mellow, and more "veiled" than the silver surround ones. The one with the silver surround are slightly brighter, more forward, and slightly more open.
Someone correct me if I am wrong.
