Australia, mate.
Howdy,
I'm getting pretty fed up with my Fiio X1 2nd gen DAP, so I'm thinking of getting the Fiio Q1 (Mark 2 perhaps?) and pairing it with my Galaxy S4 (I got a tight budget).

Can anyone comment on how good a combo this would be (SQ and practicality)?

As far a practicality goes, I'd imagine having a device strapped to your phone is less than ideal. What bothers you about the X1? I have the X3 II and love it, especially since I can still use my phone without rubber bands spanning the screen in order to hold a dac/amp to the back

Well, the X1ii is nothing like the X3. It's an awkward, buggy mess that tends to corrupt your SD card and takes over one and a half hours to transfer 16GB of music. Apart from sound quality, my phone gives me a much better experience

I had the X1 review unit that wasn't even fully sorted out and I just copied files direct into the SDcard from my laptop, put the SDcard in, then booted up the device. Never had any issues with it recognizing files, and I never loaded tracks into any DAP. Always a loaded SDcard then boot up and/or scan.

SQ - should be comparable to the X1.

Practicality - Wear 1990s urban pants. Or a small camera holster to hold a phone with a DAC-HPamp strapped on to it. Maybe put vecro tape on the phone case and the Q1 MkII so you don't get a strap across the touch screen.

I don't have a card reader/writer. I'd need to spend extra to compensate for something that should be working properly out of the box. And even if I did get one, I don't think it will fix the crashes.

Well I didn't spend extra just for a review unit. My laptop had a card reader built in, and so does my new one, aka "why I didn't buy a metal chassis, fanless Macbook and went with a fanless but plastic Lenovo," because I shouldn't have the need to spend extra to compensate for something that Apple should have put in their device in the first place. And I have a card reader on my desktop too because RAW transfer via camera WiFi is painfully slow. And like I said, I never transfer audio to a DAP or even my Android through the device itself. Never had a problem with any Ibasso or Fiio review unit, nor any of my Android phones, including going to a meet and inserting one of my cards into a display unit, so I'm going to assume that's how they work properly out of the box.

That might also minimize the crashes, but more likely not, but in any case you didn't mention that prior to my reply, ie you only put in the slow transfer and card corruption.

In any case, you might want to wait for the Q5 Pro if you can spend more. It's got BT so if you're on the go you don't have to strap the devices together and connect them with a cable - just run BT and put each of them in separate pockets.

Q5 Pro you say? Sounds interesting!
I might wait a while and check it out when it gets released.
Thanks for the info!
