Using the rings does it cause less bass and/or more noise entering the ear cups ?

Using the ring for the pads, will it allow more outside noise to enter?

Howdy folks. I'm thinking about buying a Mahogany TH-X00 to complement my HD6XX for all of the reasons discussed here (more bass, easier to drive, etc).

I was just curious how many long term owners still love them. Reading through the majority of this thread it seems like there are a lot of folks who start off incredibly enthusiastic and then end up selling them off after a few months. I know that is common for any new headphone with a lot of hype/buzz. Just wondering how much staying power these things actually have.
Going to be selling my HD650's. I take them off immediately when trying to listen to them now days.

The headphones or the rings?

I mean the rings.

I had no problem paying $399, $449 and $499 for each version of the TH-X00 (I own all three) but for some reason I can't bring myself to pay $14.99 for these rings.
To me, 10 grams of plastic, whatever the shape, simply isn't worth this kind of money.

It's funny how these things work ^_^

Especially when you can cut out a shape from a manila folder that fits inside the rear portion of the pads and get better results for nearly free... With the Dekoni rings there is too much bass bloom and the clarity and detail of the mids/highs is reduced some.

Tried the Lawton mod without the fuzzy discs and I have to say that the bass is much tighter, the instruments come through clearer, highs aren't as hot, and the sound stage is wider. Also added the Dekoni sheepskin leather pads with the attuenator disc which make these almost perfect for a semi-closed headset.

Well, it was $8 add-on at Massdrop, I still feel it is quite expensive for such cheap plastic though. That said, I loved the sound with it added, so there is that. :)

I agree. I need to try this with some different materials. The rings with the dekoni sheepskins turned them into a boomy bassy mess

Just took the foam inserts out of my Superlux HD330/HD660 (Beyerdynamic DT990/DT770 pretty much) and put them in the cups of these. The highs aren't as piercing at all!!! So smooth and tame now. Bass is faintly less noticeable but still there. Will play around with different inserts. So far so good.

What is your opinion on each variant? I own the Purple-heart and love them but I am thinking of either buying the ebony's or the EMU-Teak version later for a bit of a smoother sound and detailed midrange. Worth it?
