Fostex x Massdrop TH-X00 Review

TR-X00 Ebony owner here. I just wanted to update this thread to say that the $15 Amazon NewFantasia cable has basically fixed the microphonics problem that I personally felt plagued these headphones. Always loved the way these sound, but found the microphonics on the stock cable (and the length!) to be ridiculous and unacceptable. I saw the NewFantasia cable recommended on other sources as a potential fix to the cable problem but never read any updates as to whether it solved the problem. Because they are rubberized and not fabric coated, the scratching sound is gone. There's still a fair bit of microphonics if you were to bump or touch the cable, but it is now within acceptable range for me. Just FYI.
I agree. I bought one of those cables too, because it was cheaper than just buying the correct connectors to make my own cable... And yeah, rubbery (almost to the point of being sticky), but less microphonic and more flexible than stock.

I find it funny I had zero problem on the TH-X00 (non-detachable version) in terms of microphonics, but on the TR-X00 (detachable version) it's pretty bad.

But glad there is a solution for it. :D

Like @Hyde00 I do not find the cable on my TH-X00 Mahogany to be bothersome at all.

Especially since I chopped it down to 1.75 meters when I modified it for balanced operation with 4 pin XLR.
I've not felt the slightest need to change anything further. The stock cable is of good quality.

Hello,
Last year they had sold a small quantity which was also gone very quickly.
Otherwise, they pop up on Ebay every now and then.
Unfortunately, they are no longer sold.
You could go for the Fostex Th610 or th900 or buy an Emu Teak.
Emu also offers the cups separately for purchase, where the rosewood is also included.
As well as other woods.

You can also use these headphones.
https://www.emu.com/teak.html

It also has the Fosse driver that was built into the Tr x00 at the time.

As I said, you can change the cups yourself for an extra charge.
Here is an impression of cups.
Otherwise, everything about the headphones is the same: the frame, the pads ect....as the Tr x 00 series.

I have learned something thank you, i didn't know it was the same drivers ! And these cups are beautiful !
I'm going to read EMU Teak reviews.
The emu teaks are a great alternative. I enjoyed them as much as the purple hearts and preferred them to the ebony or mahogany. I haven’t tried the emu Purple Heart cups, only the teak.

There's someone selling TH-X00 Purpleheart if you don't mind the fixed cable. Otherwise I do think E-Mu Teak, TH-X00 Mahogany, Purpleheart, Ebony all have their own signature.

So I don't know if E-Mu Teak would be an exact fit as I prefer TH-X00 Mahogany over E-Mu Teak. But I also prefer Denon D2000 over them I could be weird LOL. Reason being the D2000 pad does soundstage/imaging better, but TH-X00 pads do mids better. I've tried pad rolling without success.

But from my experience is that if you like something then probably stick to it, all the Fostex / Denon headphones while similar but still different enough from each other.

Let us know what you end up with.

I would prefer the detachable cable.

An other option is to buy again the TH900mk2 which i also had in the past.
I had TH900 didn't like the sound signature, tried TH-X00 pad, D2000 pad , TH610 pad, both Yaxi pads and thought was "okay" so ended up selling it LOL.

Though I've been told the TH900 Anniversary Tuning are great. Maybe try that instead (Pearl, Sapphire and Purple are anniversary tuning).

But cheaper to hunt down another Purpleheart lol.

I was not boried by the TH900mk2 signature, the treeble didn't fatigue me ears but i think the price difference between the TH900 and the TR-X00 is not necessary worth... and i think that the purplehart is as beautiful as the red

Yeah I think that was ultimately the issue for me, I tried TH900 and D9200, which I thought was more different in tuning and small bump in resolution. But to me the difference didn't warrant the 3-4x price jump. I guess diminishing return hits hard in this hobby.

Though stock TH900 did give me treble headache which was surprising since I'm generally very treble tolerant (I even thought Grado sounds good).

To me the new D5200/D7200/D9200 line has more refined tuning but in general is more closed sounding than the Fostex made headphones D2000/D5000/D7000 and TH-X00/TH610/TH900. Since the new Denon line is more closed where as Fostex is more semi-open.

I was using D2000 for a while later switched to D5200, right now using Hifiman R7DX LOL (surprise!). But I never did own the Purpleheart (demo for 5 min only), so this piqued my interest........ LOL. Maybe now I should also hunt down a Purpleheart. Though I keep remembering I didn't like the stock TH-X00 pads...... sigh....... choices.........
