Fostex x Massdrop TH-X00 Review

I've been dreaming up a scenario where I can buy Dan's Ether C pads and transplant them to the TH-X00. I can already tell by the looks of these that I won't like the stock pads they have on there. Dan hasn't offered yet to sell the Ether / Ether C pads so I might just need another set of Alpha pads that will do for now.

I don't think the Ether pads are a good idea. They are specifically sewn to allow the Ether drivers (vertical rectangle) to breathe, and will create reflections with other types of drivers, especially round dynamic ones.

Do keep in mind almost all the well known pads out there will work with the TH-XXX lineup, including Brainwavz, Shure, etc. If it fits on a T50RP, it'll be a fit (albeit tight) on these.

I don't know about that. It looks like Ether C pads would be a good match and are still large enough to not cause reflections from the 50mm driver.

I believe these to be the same as the Alpha pads, correct? Or no? I've had a Lawson modded D2000 with alpha pads and those sounded fantastic. Of course YMMV and IMO. Although totally worth it just for comfort alone.

^ Welllll, unless there's more than one first hand experiences with China quality control being a problem reported by more than a few people I believe this really is something to be taken with a grain of salt. I don't have proof. Just gut.

Ah...you should check out the Hifiman threads. More than enough first hand issues there :)

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying anything bad about these Fostex/Massdrop wood creation. I'm just saying in general, things made in Japan are typically better quality than China.

But now we've derailed. RELEASE THESE HEADPHONES ALREADY!

It matters to some, I don't mind at all that it's made in China but if it was made in Japan that'd be a bigger bonus.

It would also likely have a bigger price tag to match.

By that logic, Audeze should have excellent build quality because built in the USA, yes? Yet, I believe Hifiman has far less problems than Audeze, and just as you suggested, pay a visit to the Audeze threads as well :)

Never be too quick to judge.

Made in China but cant complain with price of $399, these might be TH900 that never was  (I had TH900). Issue I had with TH900 was recessed mid's so I had to crank up volume to get past that flaw. I like quiet to mid level listening so if the massdrop edition will fix the recessed mids and tame high frequencies and not mess with bass this will be best value headphone of the year.

This exactly. I owned the TH900 for a day...

Why do you do this to me, Fostex?

As a past owner of both the TH-600 and TH-900, all the TH-X00 needs to do is get rid of the garish 5-6khz shenanigans which both the 600 and 900 share. If they can manage JUST that, this is a complete win.

Unlike the hyperbole and expectation bias, I expect these to sound more like the 600 than the 900.

And to those bitching about soundstage being smaller, well, yes, that's what happens when mids are pushed forward compared to before. You can't have everything. Part of the 600-900's soundstage properties is due to distant mids relative to bass and treble. This isn't the case for every headphone out there, but recessed mids do help some headphone soundstaging.

I would hope these to be bass/mid first, treble second. That would lead to less micro detail, but smoother, more enjoyable experience. I'll take that any day.

Trying to EQ this treble on my TH900, cant seem to tame the treble without ruining the sound. any recommendations on specific numbers?
