Am seriously considering a pair of these but am reading confusing reviews with some suggesting they are a dynamic headphone and others stating that they are planar magnetic.

Anyone able to definitively confirm?

I had already seen that - hence the question!!!

The Specification quotes:

Specifications

Type:    Open RP (Regular Phase) dynamic type - See more at: http://www.fostexinternational.com/docs/products/TH500RP.shtml#content-3-tab-tab

So....are they 'dynamic type' or, as stated elsewhere, planar magnetic?

Says planar right there.

look up Regular Phase in here.
RP = Regular Phase = T20, 40, 50RP, and 500RP

In Detail

  1. Employs the uniquely developed RP (Regular Phase) diaphragm which consists of etched copper foil on the surface with high heat resistant polyimide film as the base material. The distinctive characteristic of planar diaphragm is further evolved by newly tuning the entire driver unit

 the main thread on these in this site, first post says they are, as does title

Iso-dynamic, ortho-dynamic  and Regular Phase-dynamic are all basically interchangeable describing the style of design.
 Planar ( flat panel )though also includes electrostatics,  so PLANAR is a more broad term.
