Topic: can I do this? T50RP specs are impedence of 50ohms and sensitivity 98db/mw; in a dynamic that'd be no problem but I really don't know the first thing about orthos and based on my limited reading up they seem like a whole different beast. I haven't seen a single mention of someone using orthos directly out of a portable actually...

The current gen Fostex orthos (T50RP, T40RP, T20RP) are all efficient and will easily get loud enough from nearly any DAP. Of course, they will sound better with a better source and better amplification, but that is the case with all headphones... especially ones meant for home use. And if you ever plan on modding them, that decreases efficiency as well.

True. I should've been more explicit; if you plan on damping the backs of the drivers with felt, efficiency will decrease.
