Can it be charged during the USB connection with the computer?  or only via the adapter?

Considering all that it does it is typical. The iQube which is also a Headphone amp dac has a similar battery life. Both are able to drive for the most part any heavy load. This draws down batteries. But when using sensitive IEMs both will exhibit longer battery life. I certainly don't listen to a portable amp 8 hrs straight. And there are always opportunities for me to recharge before the next use. High quality sound with multiple functions like these pieces come at a price of battery life.

I have one Iqube V2,   I also don't have the problem with their battery life because I used it most of the
time with the computer which I can use the Dac function of the Iqube V2.   However I don't think Iqube V2
DAC function can not be used with the ipod 6gen or after, iphone, ipad because we cannot stream the digital
signal out from those devices but the fostex hp p1 can and it also has a very good dac used according to one review.
If its amplifier function can match those of Iqube V2  I will more than happy but I don't think it's powerful enough
to drive the present day hiend phone i.e. HE, LCD2 or HD800, I am sure it can drive all the ultrasone, grado, sony
I have ordered one from Drew after the message that it can be charged via UsB.  Hope I can get it next week.

Correct neither the iQube nor the Fostex will have the balls to drive an impedance swing like the HD800 or a load like the HE6 to respectible levels and sound quality. And yes both will run off of USB power and charge at the same time. No the iQube does not have an Apple Authentication chip like the Fostex HP-P1 or Cypher Labs Solo or Wadia iTransport etc.
First shipment arrives Today. And once sold I am told I wont have more until Nov So get orders in quick.....

You're right that I probably won't use it for 8 hours straight, but it also needs 5 hours to recharge. What size Li-Ion batter does it even have? If it doesn't at least have a 1300 I'd be very disappointed, though 1500+ would be cheap enough to not even effect the price, and the profits. Is it user changeable?

I'm glad we have another hp-p1 distributor. I think this is the best device on the market to get a digital signal out of your ipod. Carrying 2 devices isn't so bad with the clas you have to carry 3 devices which is a little more unwieldy.

I have just received the Fostex HP-P1 shipped internationally from USA to Thailand within a week.
Excellent service from Drew again.
I have a brief use of the Fostex HP-P1 today.   I think the sound quality is excellent for the audiophile
and chinese music that I listened today.  The sound is better than the sound I listened from superimod via imod
cable to the Iqube V2 .   The sound is smooth with great 3D soundstage, the detail is also very good( it also
depends on the filter option that you use)  The sound is more laid back, less dynamic which is different
from the SR71B that I recently used.   Initially I thought its amplifier section will not be strong enough to drive
present day headphone.   So I started from Grado RS1, then to JVC DX1000, Denon 7000 (LA7000 with Jena wire)
to my surprise the Fostex HP-P1 drove them effectively.   Later I tried with the LCD2 rev2 and then  with the
Sennheiser HD800 ,  again the Fostex HP-P1 doesn't have any problem driving those cans adequately.
I will try to compare with different genre of music and with more difficult cans  e.g. the HE5 (which I don't think
it will have any problem) and the ultimate test is HE6.  I only use the filter 1 and  mid gain for all the phones mentioned  
so it may be possible to drive the HE6 with high gain, but I don't know how the sound quality will turn out  to b  to be as goo
 However I don't expect the Fostex HP-P1 will be able to drive HE6 effectively as the balanced out SR71B or
the AKG K1000  which are problems to all portable amplifier except probably the SR71B and the Ibasso.  
I will also try to compare with the superimod+imod cable / and superimod + VPcapdock + SR71B (or iqube V2) later.
I don't have CLAS to compare but I think I am satisfactory right now and I don't want to carry too much for a portable music.
I am also quite confident that if I use Drew's USB cable the sound quality will improve with more detail and speed, however
this time I can only use the Fostex provided USB cable because of miscommunication.

I have tried the amplifier section of the HP-P1 again today against the HE5, HE6 and the AKG K1000.
The Fostex did not have any problem the HE5   however what surprised me was that it also can drive
the HE6 and even AKG K1000 quite will and I need only to use medium gain with Filter one.
I can now conclude that the Fostex HP-P1 amplifier section is strong enough to drive all the difficult
present day headphones without any problem.    I have not tried to compare the sound quality of the HP-P1
yet although it seems to be better than the Imod  that I have been using with the SR71B and the protector.
I don't have CLAS so I cannot comment anything on that.  Because it can drive the AKG K1000 without any
problem I think the amplifier power is stronger than that of Iqube V2 and the protector which I tried to use
both to drive the AKG K1000 before.
I hope that I will get Drew LOD to USB cable soon for more accurate compareison of the sound quality of the Fostex HP-P1 against
the  superimod (using high quality imod cable) and the superimod+VPcap dock (using ALO mini to mini and Imod
LOD)

Most of the time, I would also not run this for 7-8 hours straight.  However, there are those really long trips where I do run gear for a much longer duration.    I am wondering how much battery life can be extended by adding a separated amp to the rig, using the line out.   Anybody have an idea about this?

What you could do is get one of the many available external USB battery packs. The market is flooded with them now.

Thanks Drew.  I will check it out.  I have seen hefty Energizer's and the like.  Any insight as to whether there are top-of-the-line products, or are these pretty much commoditized these days?  
 
Also, is the output voltage on these devices strong enough to charge the HP P-1's internal battery at the same rate the amp is discharging it while in use?   Or, will the HP P-1 draw directly from the USB battery pack irrespective of the state of charge on the internal battery?  I am not clear on how this works. Thanks in advance.
