apple lossless on iMod

Good afternoon.

Quick question for someone. I am using the Apple Lossless format to rip cd's.
I have noticed that, on occassion, some of the songs will download at a bit rate well over 900kbps. Other than taking up A LOT of space, is their a significant difference from a much lower bit rate?

No! The bitrate are a reflection of the file size/playing time.
Its lossless no matter the bitrate it turns out to be.

Mostly flac, but mp3@320kbps here and there.
Under that is just unfair to music in my opinion.

128 kbps AAC on an 5.5G 80GB iPod. I've never been able to hear the difference between 128kbps and lossless doing ABX tests, so I have no reason to go with a higher bit rate. Plus, even at 128, I can only fit 60% of my library on my iPod.

really, really low bitrate atrac3 on my ancient MD player and use some really bad sony earphones to hide it, changing after 6-7 years will be upgrading to something better on both fronts

Wow, I guess I am in the minority, here - I use mainly OGG Vorbis q5 on my DAP's. My reasoning is that it has the same quality as 192 VBR MP3, but keeps the file sizes down. I also have a small amount of MP3 / WMA / AAC's for songs I purchased in those formats.

FLAC is used for CD backups, mainly. I hope to use FLAC as the standard on my DAP, when storage sizes / prices permit....

My sig says it all - Atrac3+/352 on all my Atrac devices (i do have a few HiSP discs). The A829 gets AAC/350VBR, and I'm pretty satisfied with the sound, but the capacity (16GB) could be more...

I like to keep everything in FLAC & converting to other lossless if needed. Lossless gives me a peace of mind

X2 -- 128kbps for my lil 4gb iAudio U3 = ~1,000 songs. Higher kbps is wasted space for me.

All of my music is mp3 and most is Lame V2, but I have a mix of others in there also like 256k.

Apple Lossless. I don't have to do anything. Just insert CD and *poof*. Very convenient.
