I have the grado rs1 for rock and jh13pro for pop.
I mainly use the hd800 for vocals and acoustics.
I'm really considering selling my hd800. I love it but for lesser price, I feel I can live with the akg k701/2 for vocals and acoustics. opinions?

I think that the K701/2 is an excellent option for these genres. Plus, it's so much cheaper than the HD800 that if the 800 was in your budget, I'm sure you could grab a K701/2 and keep it in your stable for a while to test out before selling the Senns.

If you're curious, I posted some of my impressions of the two headphones in the 800 appreciation thread a little while back (they can be found in the last 2-3 pages of the thread).

The K-702 are more airy and you can feel the dynamic better in the sound, the 702 have a better mids, great for vocals. The HD-800 have recessed high mids and this give you the illusion of more body to the sound that can be cool with trance music but not necessary with vocals and acoustics.

Whoa, you must have the dAKG67 gene, which means you're born with ears that are perfectly tuned to the K701/702 phones...the latest research shows about 1/10,000 people possess this genetic defect.

Anyways, yeah, I think one could be perfectly happy with the K701/702. I could certainly see myself being happy with it, provided I have the proper amplification for it.

With a great source and amp the HD800’s.

With an average source and amp that won’t let the HD800’s shine, then best stick to the K701/2’s.

IMO, the RS1 bests the K701 for acoustic music. That's mostly because of a more intimate presentation, which may not be your cup of tea.

I've never liked the K-701 for vocals. It doesn't sound right.

If you like the AKG presentation, consider upgrading to a K-501. They are exceptional with vocals and acoustics. I regret selling mine, but I prefer the HD-800 they were sold to pay for.

Have you considered selling or trading the HD-800 for a K-1000? The K-1000 is about at the top of the heap with vocals and acoustic music. Hook them to a speaker amp and bliss out.

A couple others I think are outstanding with vocals and acoustic are the HD-600 and the DT48. If you can turn up a used DT48 around $100, grab them. They're an entirel different experience from anything you've heard. You'll either love or hate them. If you love them, you won't find anything comparable anywhere near their price.

The last sentence is me. They made me sell my two main hitters(650/SA5000), and feel I'd need the T1 or HD800 to truly better them. Hence, Will get my first statement headphone in April. HD800 or the T1. I prefer the HD800, but if I can get the T1 for a grand or so, I might get them. Truthfully, I have no business buying a 1,000 headphone.. Thats a 1/2 month worth of pay for me, but curiousity of a statement type headphone has me intruged and would fit well with my collection of DT48's. Beyers first headphone.

Dare I mention a supposedly inferior headphone, but you could add the K601 to the list too. If you prefer your vocals and acoustic to be really up front you might find the K601 a little too laid back though.

The DT48 and akg k501 are on my want list but just having hard time thinking about selling the hd800. I'll just have audition the akg k701 first.
