For schiss, regarding your Beyers

HI!

I've been letting these things cook all weekend on a steady diet of hard rock FM Radio, and I took a brief listen to then just last night with a portable CD player... fell asleep with them on, which proves they're pretty comfortable.

Honestly, I think the problems I had with their sound are still there, and like everything else audio it's just my perceived problems... I'll need to listen to them on my big rig before I make any more judgements, but I plan to listen to them exclusively for quite some time to get used to their character, then switch back to my old phones for a while and see which offers greater enjoyment. I can see me hanging on to both pair for different applications... I definitely need a pair of closed-back phones in certain listening situations.

One thing that has me puzzled... I read a review of these phones by ??? on this site which stated the listener thought the beyers were a bit bass-heavy, and I just don't hear that yet.

Let's keep this conversation going, I'm very interested in what you hear and with what equipment. Hope you get your pair soon.

Hi!

I've been able to apply more burn-in time, and extended listening seems to have helped me get a handle on the sound of these things.

I still find the 250's have much of the same sonic characteristics I complained about before, though the upper midrange (1500 hz) doesn't seem as "hooty", not as much of a cupped hands effect. Extreme highs seem nice and smooth yet detailed, bass hasn't seemed to change.

But there has been one significant change that has helped these phone's sound their best... I've turned the volume up!!! Probably doubled the volume I usually listen at... it sure seems these things want to be juiced in order to sing! Vocals get full bodied, bass extended, there's much more of a sense of the recorded space. I just don't know if i want to listen this loud all the time... maybe more burn-in will allow the same changes at lower volume levels. Anyone else out there found a magic volume level where their phones sound best??? I have experienced this effect with loudspeakers... some just really want the power up in order to showcase what's on the recording.

So far I'm encouraged... I hope the sonic character of these phones continues to melt away and just lets the music through. At first all my tunes sounded like they were recorded in the same studio. But slowly, more individuality is coming through.

Let me hear from you, folks! Thanks!

Hey, I'm currently considering purchasing the Beyers. You seem to have listened to them quite a bit. I have a few questions:

1.How do they feel? I mean, are they heavy or light? Do they put any pressure on your ears? Can you wear them for hours? I need specifics!

2. Would you recommend the headphones for portable use and home use?

Thanks in advance.

schiss: one thing I found with the 250s is that when I stopped -listening- to them I enjoyed them a lot more.
An example is when I was comparing them to the 831s, the 831s sound better when -listening- but when I stopped trying to hear which was best I enjoyed the way the 250s presented stuff a lot more.

As far as bass response goes - mine output PLENTY of bass, never too much, but definately enough for my tastes! (specifically in industrial/trance/goa)

rocko: I love the 250s comfort, I've worn them for 6 hours straight and forgotten that I have them on. The only thing that might annoy is the coiled cord.

For portable use they're not bad, at 80ohms they're just low enough to drive unamplified, but definately sound better from an amp IMHO.

Snufkin- Thanks for the advice! I did just that over the past few evenings... i just forgot about comparisions and listened to a wide variety of stuff and i did enjoy them, though as I said I did play them at a higher volume. Early on, before significant burn-in time, they simply had too much of their own character to allow me to do that.

And you're right, there's plenty of bass. I bet your style of music is mixed with greater bass energy up front, so the 250's must be great for that!

For those about to purchase 250's, I'm a firm believer in burn-in... these cans definitely opened up alot with continued use.

The 250's work really well with my portable stuff, very easy to drive to a loud volume.

Thanks again!

hehe, I listen to mine quite loud... probably a lot louder than I should, they just seem to hit a sweet spot at a certain level where everything sounds just right to me.. it just happens to be quite loud as well!

No doubt I'll be deaf by the end of the year, but then I'll just smile and nod to people while I listen to the music that's been burnt into my head... "tinnitus.. is that you?"
