How did the Utopia compare to the HEK in terms of weight and comfort?
Ummm I'm dying to answer this question for you but I am not allowed. I'll give you a hint. You can't get them until Wednesday!
I assume you are referring to the redesigned HEK2
Tyll's impression of the utopia
Great googly-moogly these headphones sound GREAT!!!

Well this throws a wrench into everything. If it wasn't Tyll (who previously proclaimed the SR-009 as the greatest headphone) saying all this, I wouldn't have taken it so seriously. *sigh* Perhaps I should just travel and audition all these ultra-high-end headphones before actually buying anything... I'd prefer to only have one or two, and although I've heard a handful of them, I won't be able to know which I like best until I hear them all.
Send you a PM.
Great review and about time. Tyll is right on the money about how sexy and cool black is.
Look at these pics of Utopia paired with the black Woo Audio.
Utopia paired with a silver DAVE and the black DAVE with HEK (with wood veneer) dont make the cut for me.
(all pics not mine, borrowed from online)
Someone please post a picture of the Utopia with a black DAVE. It will be a nice wall paper to have till my pre-order arrives.
Back to Tyll's review, I am surprised that he didnt talk about the SQ of Utopia vs Ether Flow.
I'll take a stab at it.
Bear in mind that this is just image editing of two photos; not an actual photo of both together. Right-click and open it in a new tab to view and download the full-size image.
Although I usually favor black electronics, I think the silver DAVE is much more gorgeous.
Thanks. That's very kind of you. Will post a pic of the real thing when my set arrives.
I really wanted to order the Focal Utopia, because it looks, in my opinion much cooler than its sibling. However after reading impressions by Tyll, Jude and others (There is nowhere near me where I can listen to it) I will give the Elear the nod.
Seemed about the same to me. I didn't have comfort issues with either of them.
From Tyll's slightly enthusiastic report:
( I can virtually see the drums and cymbals as the sticks are moved around the kit. Dianna's voice enters 18 seconds in...she's dead center right behind my eyeballs. Her slightly husky voice is perfectly integrated and present...I can almost smell the cigarettes and whiskey on her breath as it hits the back of my nose.)
LOL if he like this impression of the sound projection
... I know I hate this in-head localization. No matter how great a headphone sounds otherwise, I can't stand this effect for 5 minutes.
Mainly want to hear how close the Elear is to the Utopia.
It confuses me when soundstage is made out to be a big deal with headphones. Even cheap USB speakers are far more spacious than any headphone, and there is almost no actual difference between the soundstages of open headphones, even when you compare to slightly more spacious models like the HD 800 and Abyss. All headphones have an intimate soundstage, but that's one reason I prefer them over speakers. Makes me feel like I'm more at one with the music.
