Focal Lensys

I'm looking for reference-grade closed back headphones with good passive noise isolation under $1k. I'm told my Sennheiser HD820 is too leaky. These look like they might be a good fit, so if anyone gets their hands on this please share how the noise isolation / leak is :)

After a bit more time with them, yeah, they do leak sound / don’t isolate particularly well. Others around you will hear what you’re listening to more likely.

The biggest negative of these for me is that I’m perceiving them as W shaped. Not a problem per se, as the mids, treble & subbass is all good; but there seems to be a touch too little general bass. I get it, it means the bass doesn’t intrude on the mids but it does take a little enjoyment out of them.

That’s a shame. My fear was that they might be a little too neutral for my taste in the bass department.

Just my perception and taste preferences - could differ person to person.

When I say W it’s more of a mild W than a wild W, just with a slight reduction in bass to allow mids to be clean.

Something like that.

P.s. overall I prefer the look and feel of the Hadenys

Noticeably less bass than Hadenys? They’re almost perfect for me in that department, but sadly my open-back use cases are super slim right now.

Spoke with my local Focal rep today and unfortunately they won’t get them in stock. Neither will Headphones dot com. Lensys are part of Focal’s professional line and are sold to a completely different market. They’re available at Long & Mcquaid near me but I’d need to pay full retail which I’m not that interested in doing.

Interesting, you aren't interested in paying the price everyone else has to pay?

No. Especially not in this market. My local dealer gives me 20% off anything I buy.

Mimic, Bloom and Audio 46 all offer discounts if you ask for them.

The only items that I'd pay full price for are from boutique shops like ZMF & Modhouse.

The dealers have larger margins from their distributors so most dealers can offer discounts if you ask.

Are you keeping them?
Well, I would say they are better tuned in terms of hearing the mix which for me makes it easier to pick out details and imaging, however, they have lost a bit of that magic that the Hadenys have, some might call it musicality.

Definitely fit well into the professional line I would say and ideal for people that want a bit more clarity than the consumer tuned Hadenys/Azurys.

I may or may not keep them, haven’t decided yet. 😂

Is there good separation between instruments on Lensys compared to other totl headphones. I’m thinking about selling my HD820 for this…maybe I need to try it first

I wouldn’t say so. I don’t really have TOTL headphones. The Hifiman offerings I’ve had are wider- the Audivina in particular are much more precise in imaging, wider, taller, and have more layering.

I would definitely urge you to try before committing if you can.
