The new one is softer, with more "give" to it. I'm guessing this results in a better seal around the ear, but I'm not completely sure how that works on an open-back design. It would make total sense on a closed-back.

This sounds interesting. Pads can do a lot no matter what design we're talking about.

Like-wise on the cosmetics. I went with the pro because i have shave bald head and the Stellia's leather is untreated and has discoloured which i know is a common experience.. This put me off the going with the non pro Clear MG as it uses another light coloured headband. I need to let the Clears run in but they, do as i say sound great out the box. Does the closed vs open back come in to your decision making?

Closed or Open Back is not a great issue. I do understand views of open back being more 'airy sounding and closed being more direct and possibly more fuller sounding. I just need to collate a few views between the two versions.

I believe that Jude very carefully and quite clearly also gives several reasons why he feels that the Clear MG is a refinement to the original Clear.

The new stuff is better because Focal learns from their past experience. The fact that the review may also be a promotion is of little concern to me since I am interested in headphones and Head-fi is all about headphones. And the video is nothing if not a very thoughtful review.

Be careful with this line of thinking. There are a ton of products, both in the audio world and outside of it, that are upgraded or changed and end up being worse. Or, in the likely case of the Mg, not worse but different enough to where some will prefer the original, and opinions between the two seem to be down the middle currently.

The case of the Mg seems like it is coming down to preference, almost like an HD600/HD650 type of thing. The Clear might be more appealing to some now that it’s easier to get it for much less than the original asking price.
