I'll throw in the Mojo as a possibility, although it's slightly higher than your budget it's a great little device. Plus you get portability (if that matters to you).

Actually he’s on BPS so it’s exactly in his budget

If you can stretch go with my Simaudio 230HAD. You can probably find it use or open box for $1200 - as it sounds better to me than other much more expensive gear with this particular headphone. It's sublime.

Better than my V281 with Auralic Vega or Schiit Yggdrasil - better than my Auralic Taurus mkii with Chord 2qute (with this headphone particularly).

They honestly feel like they were made for eachother.

It’s a good recommendation but keep in mind that it’s more expensive when sold in the UK where he is. $1200 USD is just under $1000.00 here but retail on the product there is more because of import costs. Just like Chord costs more here and less in the UK.

I think it's finally time to admit I have a problem.

I bought the Clears because they would scratch my Focal itch without buying the Utopia. Instead, they made we want MORE.

I think my weak link is now my headphone rack - though it's nice to see these three headphones, battle to the death each night, just for the privilege of going on my head before I lie on the couch next to it.

At least the Clear's pretty much own my head when I'm at my desk.

Does anyone know if Focal sells the black cables that come with the professional version? I'd be interested in swapping to those so they match my black Hugo 2 better...

So, what version is best? The professional or the regular?

Basically it is 3 cables vs 2 cables + extra pads + different colour.

It's pretty much preference, I got the regular one for both the studio and leisure listening and it fits my black/grey theme in the studio a bit better. don't really think your going to miss out on anything.

Focal says the Professional and the regular Clear are the same headphone, with a different color scheme and accessories, so either way, you’re getting a great headphone.

Ok, I got the regular Clear. The red pads look a bit too funky maybe on the professional.

I can recommend the Chord Mojo abd the iFi Nano iDSD Black Label. They both drive the Clear quite nicely. Plenty of power, though I find the Nano gives me a wider soundstage and slightly better instrument separation.

anyone curious about the Cavalli amps on Massdrop for their Clears? I'm sort of zeroing in on the Woo WA6SE, but the Cavalli CTH and the Liquid Carbon are both really inexpensive balanced amps ( which the WA6SE is not). The CTH just came available today as "in stock and ready to ship."

I can recommend Mojo as one way to go, and Bifrost multibit/Asgard II as another. I have a slight preference for the Mojo.
Multibit Bifrost with Vali 2 sounded great also -- fantastic soundstage if a little grainy
