Focal, Adi, Phonitor setup

Well...here is my take. If you are wishing to mimic mixing in front of nearfield monitors, i would take into account the equilateral triangle of the typical setup.

If you don't have the manual for the phonitor 2, there is a chart on page 16 or 17?, that can at least give you a starting point as to what the speaker angle and and crossfeed knob should be set to mimic the speakers being setup equilateral (60 degrees). If i recall it's something like 75 degrees on the angle and setting 2 or 3 on the crossfeed, from memory.

Check out the pdf manual from SPL if you dont have a paper copy.

I think the reason why I’m confused is due to the fact that the focal clears are factory tuned to sound like a speaker monitoring, no matter how aggressive I change the settings on the Phonitor matrix, I don’t hear much of a difference.

Crossfeed can be subtle. It can be a little difficult to verbally describe, but for me, it brings the center image into better definition. I use software based crossfeed, ghz canopener.

A lot of people who mix or check mixes on headphones do not like crossfeed or corrective eq(phase issues). If you aren't having problems with your mixes translating, why bother adding the variable of crossfeed? Leave it off if you don't like it.

Are you ABing by bypassing and enabling crossfeed with the switch on your phonitor 2? You should be able to hear some difference.

Crossfeed is a must if you’re mixing on headphones…. The Phonitor 2 matrix is old technology though compared to the Focal clear mg. If I knew the Focal clears were tuned this good, I wouldn’t have bought the Phonitor 2 mainly for the crossfeed matrix.

When I A/B the matrix, I do hear a very subtle difference on the Focal clears compared to other headphones.

It depends, i know a lot of mix engineers and mastering engineers, more accomplished than you or i, who have things like...ya know...grammys for their work in music and music for major motions pictures who do not use crossfeed, or correction, while working on headphones

It really depends. With that said, id recommend giving canopener a try. I know more than a few mastering engineers working on headphones in their travel rigs who use it for crossfeed. I see you have an RME adi. Crossfeed software allows for a much greater adjustability in tailoring it to your ears than whats built it to the RME

It may be worth giving a look if you find crossfeed essential. Don't feel bad about your Phonitor 2 purchase. It holds it's value enough where you shouldn't have trouble selling it if it doesn't add anything to your mixing rig.

Below is a pic of my chain...soundsource for system wide, to sonarworks, into canopener. Sent screen shot of my settings in case you need a start point.

I’ll definitely check out the software canopener, looks very tweakable! You are right RME does have a built in crossfeed but it’s with limited options. Cheers man
