Any poker players around these here parts? I was introduced to the game a couple of months ago, and now I can't seem to get enough of it. It's horribly addicting, and even when the stakes are so low that they pale in comparison to cost of the beer that disappears during the long 10 hour sessions (often running clear through to the morning). The title of this thread refers to one of the hands that came up for me last night... and what a hand it was.

I'm still fairly new to the game. I know a bit, and I am reading up on a few books written by some of the professionals out there. The subculture surrounding it is fairly interesting, too. I'm sure anyone who has seen the movie Rounders has probably had some sort of interest in the game. The World Series of Poker is also something to behold... I still find it amazing that people can play poker professionally (think along the lines of a daily grind, 9 to 5 type job... only it's probably 9pm to 5am.

) It's nothing I'd ever want to do, but I still find it damn interesting.

I played in a couple of tournaments over at the local "Indian" casino, and they were quite fun (when attended with friends, with whom you can later comment on the eccentric personalities you will unavoidably meet in such a place -- like "Fast Freddy"). But to get a sense of how new I am (and of how large my bankroll is), I've only played a 25-50 non-tourney home game before. Or rather, it may be more accurate to say a 0.25-0.50 game.

I think we've talked about this before you and I. I used to have a pretty wicked poker jones. Cooled down a bit lately. It was mostly about a 40 dollar buy in no-limit home game or I'd go to bicycle club or commerce casino (local la spots) for some 3-6. 6-12 once in a while. Everyone has their own style, I've read a ton of books and like to do a lot of coffee housing. My cousin/last year's roommate plays entirely on feel, never read a poker book in his life and spends most of his time day dreaming at the table. That kid got mad skills though. Mad. Anyways...

Ah yes, I recall that little discussion. I guess your friend has his own little playbook... probably one that only makes sense to him. I've got a friend like that... except his skills are less mad and more sad.

If you don't mind my asking, how do you typically make out? I'm a pretty conservative player... fold winning hands perhaps a little too often. I very rarely lose money, but then again, my gains are minimal -- but they are steady. I think this will probably be my lot in poker-life until I can get more comfortable with odds and until I get a few more games under my belt.

i'm all over the map. probably up over all from the home games. i kept track once for about a month, came out to about 200 up. local casinos i know i'm up. i usually aim for about 50 bucks up out of a 3-6 game after 5 or 6 hours. i come out even or up money about 70 or 80 percent of the time. vegas on the other hand... ugh... had some mad cold streaks out there. (i blame the free drinks. mmmm... free.) i don't even want to get into what i've dropped out there. my cousin though. cleans it up. it's beautiful. i know another guy who's paying tuition through poker too. it's rare but it's out there. i couldn't handle it. especially online poker. damn that's boring. so yeah...

USCgoose: That site has some nice pointers. A good read. Thanks for the link!

LSUtiger: Unfortunately, I don't get cable. I believe it's on the Travel Channel that they show it. Occasionally it gets on espn2, when it's a live tournament (I think). I wish there were streaming media of Travel Channel... it could happen one day. Then you could pay individual fee of like $2 a month or something like that for one station (via the internet). That's be pretty cool...

Online poker scares me. I fear addiction if I played online poker with real money. To me, there's a big difference between sitting in on a real-life game and sitting at home in front of the computer. Sitting at home in front of the computer is way too easy to do, and hardly as fun as being in the midst of the action. I love the feel of felt (even if it's home-game felt) and of the clay chips in hand.

I played $1 ante Texas in school all the time. A few people still owe me money.
